UCLA application essay

Prompt: “UCLA Anderson is distinguished by three defining principles: Share Success, Think Fearlessly, Drive Change. What principles have defined your life and pre-MBA career? How do you believe that UCLA Anderson’s principles, and the environment they create, will help you attain your post-MBA career goals?” (750 words maximum)

Background:
– I grew up in Irvine, California. The city is known for its school district quality and low crime rate (it has the nickname of “The Bubble”)
I think it has made me more positive and carefree.

– My favourite quote ever since high school is “Pleasure is the only thing to live for. Nothing ages like happiness” by Oscar Wilde. (Please use it in the essay =)
It’s not because I am selfish or fear taking on responsibility, on the contrary, because life is short so it is more important to do things that you truly like instead of pursuing the vague idea of “happiness”.

– I have always been very aware to be eco-friendly from a young age. I recycle and never use plastic bags.
(Environment is important)

– I came across the idea of “zero waste” a couple years ago and decided to take things up a notch. Partially because as I get older, I start to realized that I want to give back to the mother Earth and make this world a better place. I as one person probably will not be able to “change” the culture suddenly and make everything “eco-friend” and “green”, but that is only the now and current me… You have to start somewhere and hopefully in 3 years, or 10 years I will be in a position to assist people in living a green life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_waste

– My interests: Clean energy and electric cars.
I would like to connect the 2 concepts: “convenience” and “eco-friendly”
For example, if clean energy/ solar energy is more common and if more gas stations offer them, people will be more inclined to purchase an electric car”
(That’s what I would like to do after business school)

-I have plans to finish my education before I am 30. As such, I believe it is time I start taking responsibility and stop behaving in an immature manner. Anderson is the perfect place to learn, their customized track provides learning in sustainability market, and tech leadership. It also offers business foundation, one need to study marketing. The school’s three defining principles create a good environment that will enable me to achieve my post-MBA career goals with ease. For one, the principle of driving change will enable to make the world a better place. People need to change their perception towards recycling. They also need to rethink their day to day practices to avoid wastage. This requires change. As such, the principle will enable me to understand ways through which I can ensure change among people.

– I am not quitting my current job because it is not good enough for me. On the contrary, I want to take a new path that stands to benefit the society at large. The MBA is intended to prepare a path that I can use to pursue a career in achieving zero waste. I wish to concentrate on leaders in sustainability and the specific class will be green energy entrepreneurship. Currently, I have the accounting and finance background (undergrad: math and management science and 5 years accounting work experience). I intend acquire marketing skill, sales skills, and tech skills. Specifically I have plans to understand the product technology and the people dynamics. Equally I plan to improve my understanding in relation to how to sell products.

– I still hold my motto very close to my heart, and I think it is only fair that I make sure the future generation have a choice too (If they want to pursue pleasures in life, then we have to make sure that the earth is in good shape)

– Essentially, I now derive great pleasure in bringing happiness to mother earth

– Not to sound arrogant, but I wish to obtain the necessary skills and techniques from Anderson because it is the best in this “green technology” field. I have confidence that personality-wise I will be able to embrace any challenge and remain calm and level-headed.

The economic concepts you have accumulated during our course, consider the trade policies that serve our self-interests and what best serves the global social interests

While referring to the “EYE on YOUR LIFE” section on page 235 of the textbook, and the economic concepts you have accumulated during our course, consider the trade policies that serve our self-interests and what best serves the global social interests. For example, as U.S. consumers we are the winners in globalization, which has brought iPods, Wii games, Nike shoes, and a wide range of other products to our stores. However, the big losers of globalization include the U.S. textile workers and furniture makers whose jobs disappeared overseas and the African farmers whose crops were blocked by trade restrictions and subsidies in the United States and Europe.

After establishing your own proposed trade policy pertaining to global social interests and responsibilities, post and discuss your proposals. Include your recommendations regarding our responsibilities, if any, towards the winners and losers of globalization. Include our gains and losses from imports and exports in your proposal and address any additional costs which we, as consumers, may need to pay due to your proposals. Are your proposals worth the trade-off? Justify your proposals and respond to the proposals from your classmates.

Discussion 6.2: Externalities in Your Life
Subscribe

While referring to the “EYE on YOUR LIFE” section on page 259 of the textbook, think about the externalities, both negative and positive, which play a huge part in your life. Also, think about the incentives that attempt to align your self-interest with social-interests.

Discuss and post your responses to the two externalities addressed in this section, which included the gasoline tax and the incentive subsidized tuition. Justify your proposals and respond to the proposals from your classmates.

Should the gas tax be higher to discourage the use of automobiles? What are your responses to economists who recommend incentives to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions? Should Americans be considered about GHG emissions when it’s predicted that by 2050, three quarters of carbon pollution will come not from the United States, but from developing countries?

Should school tuition be lowered to encourage more people to enroll in colleges and universities? If so, consider the effects on the quality and quantity of the education. Should the Federal and State governments offer additional subsidized incentives, paid by the taxpayers, to encourage more people to enroll in colleges and universities? Or do you believe that we have these incentives just about right in the social interests?

“Please describe how you can personally improve the compliance of the laboratory operations (Safety and Quality)”

Im doing a placement at one of the sites at GlaxoSmithKline in QA (Chemical and Inspection) department. I need to prepare a 5 minute presentation on the subject: –

“Please describe how you can personally improve the compliance of the laboratory operations (Safety and Quality)”.

In a nutshell what I am doing here:

The site Im working at produces antibiotics (containing peniciline). I work in a QA Lab which involves routine testing. Finished products are brought up to the lab, then logged on into the system and are ready to be tested. We have got loads of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure) that we need to follow. Every test done on a sample is recorded on the special proforma (sample no, product type, weight, result, sign, date etc.) Basically everything we do has to be recorded. There are live binders, log books, etc.. everything is by law. If you are not sure of something, please ask .

Annual reports will be provided as well for these 3 years and all ratios formula will be provided too to be used .
All ratios calculations should be in appendix at the end of the essay and not included in word limit, inside the essay will be just the results of the calculations and the analysing. Simple example for the essay will be provided as guide.

Word Limit: 2500 words equivalent

Purpose:

This assessment task assists students to develop skills in:

• Selecting, completing, calculating and interpreting appropriate ratios from Financial Statements to determine measures of business performance and support management planning and decision making.
• Recognising and considering the effects of interpretations of Financial Statements and performance indicators by external entities.

Assessment Task:

Lincoln Indicators professes nine golden rules for successful sharemarket investing. The golden rules relate to: financial health; management assessment; outlook/forecast; share price value; share price sentiment; liquidity and size; principal activities; price sensitive announcements; and follow all of the rules above. Details on the golden rules are available at:
http://www.lincolnindicators.com.au/StockMarketSoftware/GoldenRules

A pdf information sheet can be downloaded here:
http://www.lincolnindicators.com.au/Content/Static/PDFs/9GR-Info-Sheet.pdf

Apply the nine golden rules investment framework and write a report which compares and contrasts the financial position/performance of the two companies. The report should conclude by judging whether these stocks satisfy Lincoln’s investment criteria.

In judging whether the stocks satisfy the investment criteria, you should consider a number of issues within each of the golden rules. In addition to calculating ratios and other data, there should be a written discussion summarising the companies’ performance relative to each of the rules:

Golden Rule 1: Financial Health
•∙ Calculate key accounting ratios for each company that measure their profitability, liquidity, capital structure, asset efficiency and market performance for a three year period.
•∙ Assess if each company possess strong financial health with a favourable trend of financial ratios for at least two consecutive years.

Golden Rule 2: Management Assessment
•∙ This rule focuses on assessing management quality and leadership capabilities using four measurements: ROA, ROE, EPS growth, and revenue growth.
•∙ Calculate the four measurements of management assessment above for each company.
•∙ Calculate each company’s market capitalisation (i.e. share price times number of shares outstanding) and identify the industry they are in.
•∙ Use the benchmark set up by Lincoln Indicators based on market capitalisation and industry to assess the companies’ management quality.

Golden Rule 3: Outlook/Forecast
•∙ Find analyst forecast earnings for each company through large brokerage firms (e.g. Citigroup, Merrill Lynch) or other online sources (e.g. Financial Times).
•∙ Analyse the forecast earnings to determine whether the companies’ growth are sustainable.

Golden Rule 4: Share Price Value
•∙ Find out the most current share price of each company.
•∙ Using equity valuation model, calculate the estimated price of each company’s share. A simple volution model to use is the earnings multiplier approach, where estimated price is equal to P/E ratio multiplied by EPS.
•∙ Compare the share price of the companies with their estimated price. As a rule of thumb, investors should invest in undervalued shares, that is when the market share price is less than the estimated share price. The expectation is that the price of undervalued shares will increase in the future to the intrinsic value of equity, resulting in capital gains for investors.

Golden Rule 5: Share Price Sentiment
•∙ Look at the 12-month share price performance for each company and compare it with the performance of the All Ordinaries Index.
•∙ Do not invest in stocks that underperform the index.

Golden Rule 6: Liquidity and Size
•∙ This rule is to ensure that a company’s share is ‘liquid’, meaning that investors are able to sell their entire shares for that company at any time.
•∙ Find the daily volume traded for each company’s shares from the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) website.
•∙ Lincoln Indicators suggests that the daily volume traded figure is at least five times the investor’s exposure level (i.e. how much value of shares the investor intends to buy). What is the maximum amount that could be purchased following this rule?

Golden Rule 7: Principal Activities
•∙ Familiarise yourself with each company’s business operations, e.g. what they sell/provide, the industry they are in, their competitors, etc.
•∙ Perform a brief SWOT analysis to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for each company that potentially have an impact on future earnings.

Golden Rule 8: Price Sensitive Announcements
•∙ Read news and announcements about the chosen companies, as price sensitive announcements can affect share price positively or negatively.
•∙ Be aware of investing in companies that recently have negative news or announcements.

Golden Rule 9: Follow all of the above rules
