MULTI-SOURCE ACADEMIC WRITING
Write a well-organized and well-supported essay with an original thesis based on the five readings and one video for Module 3. The essay must include no less than SIX citations from these readings and/or video.

A well-organized essay has a beginning, middle, and an end. The beginning, or introduction, should include an opening sentence to grab your reader’s attention. Follow the opening sentence with a brief background on the topic or situation. In this case, it would be an explanation of the “me” society we live in today. The last sentence of the introduction is the thesis statement. The thesis states the main point of the essay.

A well-supported essay includes supporting points, details, and examples. For this essay, you must decide the best way to organize the body of the paper. Each body paragraph must have a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph.

This essay must include no less than SIX citations from these readings and/or video. Citations are to be a combination of direct quotations and paraphrased quotations with or without the author’s name. No others sources are to be used for this assignment.

The conclusion typically summarizes the main points of the essay and/or closes with a lasting impression that connects the reader to their world. In this case, where do we go from here?

Think of a situation (either interpersonal or group) in which you felt that you were not communicating very well with the other party or parties. Try to account for this breakdown in terms of cultural differences. For example, you might have been interacting with someone who seemed to be very authoritarian and, as a result, became defensive. It could be the case that the two of you differed with respect to “power distance,” as explained on p. 90. Once you have identified the situation and analyzed the problem as one resulting from one or more cultural differences of the sorts noted in Chapter 4, indicate how you might have behaved differently from the way you did in light of the principles that Galanes and Adams discuss on pp. 107-108 under the heading “Behaving Ethically in Intercultural Interactions.” You should be able to complete this assignment in 500 words.

Expected Outcome

As a result of completing the reading and writing assignment above, you should have a better understanding of how culture can and does contribute to the ways in which people in groups and other interpersonal situations interact with one another. You should also be better prepared to diagnose problematic interactions with respect to aspects of the cultural backgrounds of those involved. Finally, you will be able to minimize some of the problems you encounter by drawing on the guidelines presented in the reading.
