Government Surveillance

In “In Praise of Big Brother: Why We Should Learn to Stop Worrying and Love (Some) Government Surveillance” (pp. 236- 249), James Stacey Taylor argues for the optimistic conclusion that, with the right legal and procedural safeguards, large-scale governance surveillance would have many positive consequences. What are Taylor’s best reasons for rejecting the pessimistic worry that such surveillance could lead to an “Orwellian nightmare” that Taylor discusses at the beginning and end of his article? Do you find these considerations persuasive? Why or why not?

Prompts for Food as a Civil Issue

Content

Prompts for Food…
SCAREY MEAT: FOOD AS A CIVIL ISSUE Chapter 10 -USDA Government Inspected: Read Chapter 10.

READ THE BURGER THAT SHATTERED HER LIFE NYTIMES and Google: Huffingtonpostcom: Pink Slime for School Lunch.

(From the posted Assignment)

If you think we no longer have issues with food safety, think again! Read the article “The Burger that Shattered Her Life” New York Times, Oct.2009. Read some of the blogs about the incident. In this story, a young woman, who nearly loses her life after consuming beef tainted with E-coli, is rendered paralyzed, permanently disabled. Then, in another unrelated instance the US Government decided to purchase a meat product that is an amalgam of various parts of the cow, including tendons, along with high fat content, “washed” in ammonia.

USE THE FOLLOWING AS CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS TO SPUR YOUR WRITING.

Writing Guide:

Going on to writing an essay:

YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS BUT YOU SHOULD ENGAGE WITH SOME OF THE IDEAS..

THESE QUESTIONS SUGGEST A PERSUASIVE RESPONSE THAT CONSIDERS SEVERAL POSITIONS.

What is your reaction to the story of Stephanie Smith and to the US government’s decision to serve an amalgam, ammonia-washed meat product to children? You may write out these reactions separately or you may see these issues as being related. Do you have any objection to how we provide food safety? Do you see the US FDA, and USDA as agencies that, in spite of some unfortunate mishaps, are overall providing good and responsible service to US consumers? What things might you wish to improve or what changes would you institute? Do you take the position that government regulation should be increased or do you think that the government has little influence and effect on the current industry of the super-corporate, oligarchic food industry? OR–Do believe government intervention is wrong in a free market society?

Extended Writing: Combine your previous Blackboard Discussion Post on Tainted Meat and your reaction to USDA Government Inspected. Expand your ideas with 1or 2 of the critical thinking questions:
