Case Scenario – St – Patrick’s Nursing Home

You have recently been appointed as a trainee Human Resources Officer at St-Patrick’s Nursing Home located in central London.  During the first formal meeting with the Board of Directors you were told about the recent expansion of the nursing home by your HR Director.
You were also informed about the various problems that St Patrick’s Nursing Home have been experiencing, such as the high rate of employee turnover (caused by low pay, poor working conditions, long hours, not enough benefits or a negative atmosphere from management, fixed/inflexible contracts; inadequate salaries; recruitment based on favoritism etc.). Also complaints from residents and families about the quality of care, and staff errors due to Insufficient knowledge or application of clinical-care standards and protocols; lack of guidelines; inadequate supervision that compromised the safety and efficiency of care.
The HR Director is under pressure to increase staff retention in order to reduce future training and recruitment costs.  She believes that the current recruitment and selection policies of St-Patrick’s Nursing Home are partly responsible for the turnover problem.
The HR Director also suggested that care workers’ performance, satisfaction and commitment to the organisation depend on collaborative team-working.  She mentioned that staff members were often blamed for not communicating important messages to one another whilst on shift, not handing over effectively at the end of their shift, and coming to work “just to do their shift and go home”.
As part of your job, you are required to ensure that the recruitment planning and selection approaches are used  effectively and that the relevant legislative and policy framework of the home country are implemented during this process; and prepare a comprehensive and appropriate Performance Evaluation Plan for all of the employees working in your organisation; also you should to make some recommendations on the types of training nursing staff will require considering their current level of competence and future development requirements. At the end of the training, the employees will acquire the knowledge and skills to enable them apply the core standards set by the Care Quality Commission.
You have been asked by your boss to arrange a training session for the care staff in order to enlighten them about the techniques and leadership skills that you have used and applied over the period of time in managing and leading people at the workplace, and which they can apply to their roles. Your training session also needs to educate them about the relevance and application of different leadership theories in leading people and managing relationships with peers and subordinates.
Finally, make them aware how you have been continuously updating your knowledge and developing yourself throughout, and what the benefits of ‘investing in yourself’ were.
A grand party would be organized by your HR director praising all your hard work and achievements you would have accomplished in a short span of time working at St-Patrick’s Nursing Home.

counselor providing counseling to a same-sex couple

This week’s Discussion starts with the following basic information: You are a counselor providing counseling to a same-sex couple. The partners within that couple are parents to two children, ages 6 and 3. Beyond this basic information, you are asked to speculate how additional details might influence this couple’s experience of parenting. In your response, consider different possible aspects of their lives as parents, including how parenting may influence their couple relationship, what connections the family may have to other members of the local community, and how the parents might interact with and experience institutions related to their parenting experiences (e.g., schools, child care, health care providers, and mental health professionals).

To prepare for this Discussion, select two pairs of demographic differences from the following list: urban/rural, interracial/same race, one stay-at-home parent/dual career, higher/lower socioeconomic status, residency in a state where a legal union is possible/residency in a state where a legal union is not possible, secular/religious. Consider how the same-sex couples’ parenting experiences might differ between each side of the categories you selected.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 the two categories of demographic differences that you selected. Explain how the couple’s relationship and their parenting experiences might differ between each side of the categories you selected. For example, if you chose urban/rural as one of your categories, explain how the experiences would differ if the couple lived in an urban area or if they lived in a rural area. Finally, explain how your counseling approach might differ based on the different experiences of the couple.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

I think the discussion this week is complex, and will require some researching, contemplation, and critical thinking from each of you. Exciting! As you contemplate same sex parenting, I think it is important to consider the various levels of challenges the couple might experience as they work to raise their children.  Not only will the couple experience the same discord a heterosexual couple would experience when it comes to parenting, they also must manage the potential scrutiny and societal difficulty that might emerge due to their relationship.

In this week’s discussion, I’d like for each of you to think about how to complete this case study information. The information given is intentionally vague so that we might have a variety of different scenarios to consider. You are asked to speculate how additional details would influence this couple’s parenting experience. Be sure to include two pairs of demographic differences from the list provided and use those to help you consider how parenting experiences might differ between the two ends of the continuum of the categories you selected (select two categories, for example, I might select interracial/same race and secular/religious as my two categories to explore.) I can’t wait to read what you all come up with!

Vietnam War

I attached the instructions of the essay for your reference. In summary, my professor asked me to interview one person that took part in a historical event and narrate it based on what that person tells me. And the person I interviewed is my brother in law who was in the navy of the Vietnam Republic (the Vietnam before 1975). I have some facts that my brother in law just shared with me this morning and I will provide it to you for writing. So to help me with this essay, you – as the writer – to some extends, need to know about Vietnam War.

Textual Analysis

Below is my professors syllabus instructions for the essay.

Essay (Textual Analysis)

A “Textual Analysis,” sometimes called a “close reading,” is a kind of academic essay.  This sort of document pays special attention to the language and interpretive possibilities offered by what appears on the page itself.  Because this essay is analytical in nature, it needs to be thesis-driven; it will also need to include textual evidence and offer thoughtful reasoning.  And, because it is a literary essay, it will need to deal with the imaginative world created by the texts we have read, not your feelings, and not “the real world.”  I will expect this essay to be at least four full pages long with an additional page attached to cite any sources you have relied on, including the text you wrote about.  Using direct evidence from the book will be essential for success.  Deadlines for this assignment are staggered throughout the term (and are based on which text you’re writing about).

Resources section under Case Brief

The case brief will be graded on the rubric located in the Resources section under Case Brief. Please carefully review the rubric before you start the assignment.

Make sure to double space your assignment. You may use single space in the various sections of the brief but be sure to double space between the sections.

Brief the case of Maryland v. Pringle, 540 U.S. 366 (2003). This case can be found at the following link http://supct.law.cornell.edu/supct/pdf/02-809P.ZO or under the “Resources” section of the classroom.

Legal case names should be done in standard “Blue Book” format. Example:
York v. Smith, 65 U.S. 294 (1995). For further information see http://www.law.cornell.edu/citation and look under the “How to Cite” section. Bluebook citation information is also found in the course materials section.

Please note that your brief should be, for the most part, in your own words. By briefing a case, you are reading the entire court opinion then summarizing it into your own words so that the important information from the brief is easier to understand and remember. If you are using language from a case, please be sure to put it in quotes and include the reference.

The Innocence Project

1. Visit The Innocence Project Internet site. Read about the problems with scientific evidence, including DNA evidence and problems associated with forensic science crime labs. http://www.innocenceproject.org/understand/Unreliable-Limited-Science.php

With so much attention focused on scientific evidence in television crime shows, it is important to understand the limits of science and the problems associated with using this type of evidence in the criminal justice system. What aspect of the reading from the Innocence Project website did you find most interesting and why? Do you believe that DNA evidence is properly used in our system today? Why or why not?

2. Research the Justice for All Act of 2004 at http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ovc/publications/factshts/justforall/welcome.html. It is federal legislation that, among other things, grants federal inmates the right to petition the federal court for DNA testing to support innocence claims. There are other provisions that address preserving evidence and making post-conviction DNA testing available to state inmates. Do you think this is worthwhile legislation? Why or why not?
