Selected quotation from Moby Dick

Select ONE quotation.
1- "There is no quality in the world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing else exists in itself." (Chapter 11)
2- "It is all in all what mood you are in" (Chapter 86)

Each quotation appears in the voice of Ishmael as a narrator. Select one of the quotations and discuss it in relation to your understanding of the novel, backing up your generalizations with brief references to specific scenes, patterns, motifs, and the like.
This topic calls for a more personal essay, focused on and informed by your understanding of the novel. Personal opinions are welcome, but like any assertions, opinions should be clarified and supported.

Describe personal thought based on the book

International relations theor – a critical introduction
by Cynthia Weber
ISBN: 978-0-415-71304-7 (dont need to read all I think from ch 1-5or6)

1. The post-Cold War/ post-9/11 international system has been characterized by Francis Fukuyama, as the “End of History,” and by Samuel Huntington as a “Clash of Civilizations.” First, describe what it is they mean by these phrases and then critically assess their views (Fukuyama and Huntington). 2. What political-economic policies underpin the “Washington Consensus,” and assess their potential impact on small emerging economies of the Global South? Provide case examples. 3. Carefully assess Bernard Lewis’ “The Roots of Muslim Rage,” and Edward Said’s response to this view of the “Muslim World.” 4. Theories, like political ideologies, are constituted by myths, values and strategies/ blueprints about the world- so is “Carnism.” In what ways are theories of World Politics, such as realism, similar to the ideology of “Carnism?” 5. Discuss the basic assumptions, and weaknesses of Modernization Theory? Is the term, as well as the process of globalization, a sanitized/ reincarnation of Modernization and Development Theory or not? 6. What does Edward Said mean by, “the media have become obsessed with something called “Islam,” which ———-only means two things, both of them unacceptable and impoverishing.” 7. Provide a “historical materialist” critique of globalization, and in turn, critique the historical-materialist conception of history, revolution and capitalism. Note: Your answer(s) must be well thought out and organized. Be analytical. Use the readings, lectures, videos, and class discussion to support your answer(s). Show support for what you say by citing class materials and by using notes within the text. Your grade will be based on the accuracy, and consistency of your analysis; the strength of the arguments you develop and the depth and breadth of support you provide. You do not need to use outside sources. You just need to pick 4 topics and write.

Trinity

Take Home Exam on the Trinity
Our unit on the Trinity will culminate in an exam that you must complete at home and hand in during class when you return from Easter Break, on Tuesday 22 April 2014. The exam is worth 75 Points.

1. As we discussed in class, although the doctrine of the Trinity is not explicitly stated in the New Testament, much of the foundation for that doctrine is to be found within its pages, beginning with the question: If only God can save us from our sins, then how can Jesus and the New Testament authors make this claim about him? Describe how the words of Jesus and the writings of Paul and John made the case that Jesus was divine and in so doing laid the foundation for the doctrine of the Trinity.
2. Jews and Christians agree that God is Life. What does it meant to assert that God is Life? And how, according to C.S. Lewis (MereChristianity), does Jesus as the Son of God bring humanity to share in this Divine Life?
3. Although Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in the One True God (the God of Abraham) only Christians believe in the Trinity: that God is comprised of Father, Son and Spirit. Of these three groups, only Christians believe that God is Love in the truest, natural sense. What, according to C.S. Lewis and Robert Wilken, is the connection between the Doctrine of the Trinity and the Christian claim that God is Love?

The Film “Triumph of the Will” Scene Analyzation

In a 3-4 page typed, and double-spaced essay, please discuss the following: How does Triumph of the Will succeed or not succeed as a work of propaganda? First, you will have to determine what director Leni Riefenstahl?requested personally by Adolf Hitler to make the film?intended to convey in Triumph of the Will. Hint: Germany as a strong country that has returned from the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles, with a vow to never allow such humiliation to occur again. Indeed, she begins the film with a reference to WWI and Germany?s ?suffering.? BE SURE TO ANALYZE AND INTERPRET RATHER THAN RETELL WHAT HAPPENS IN THE FILM. It will be important to focus on Hitler at some point in your essay and describe how he appears, how he speaks, what he says, and contemplate why the German people followed him willingly. Also think about some of the questions on the study guide (paragraph below), such as the path that the U.S. followed in grim economic times in comparison with Germany?s course of action. Again, focus on details from two or three scenes from the film and analyze what the director chose to show, and how she showed it. This film was made in 1934?one year after Hitler came to power?and released in 1935. World War II began when Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939.
(STUDY GUIDE) Triumph of the Will is the best known propaganda film of the twentieth century. Leni Riefenstahl filmed the 1934 Nazi Party rally in the medieval city of Nuremberg for the express purpose of promoting a positive image of Adolf Hitler?who helped produce the film?and the country he came to rule one year earlier. The director staged some of the scenes in Triumph, often using many takes to get it right: hence, it is not, technically speaking, a true documentary. The completed film is out of chronological order, edited with the intention of presenting the most powerful images that Riefenstahl shot in 1934. The first scenes of an airplane transporting Hitler to the rally?like a mythical god descending through the clouds?sets the tone for the film: Hitler is the messiah who will lead Germany back to greatness after the humiliation of its defeat in World War I and the unfair treatment it received in the Treaty of Versailles. Military strength and unity of the German people are central themes of the film. The political chaos of the 1920s and early 1930s, along with the economic disaster of those years, have been erased and replaced with order and hope in the figure of a true German leader, i.e., Adolf Hitler. Indeed, as Nazi leaders claimed, only ?Der F?hrer? showed the strength of will needed to save Germany from Zionist-influenced communism.
As you watch the film pay close attention not only to what is shown, but also to what is said by the various leaders and others. Things to think about: what type of people in particular does Riefenstahl focus her camera on? What mood is conveyed? How did Hitler appear as a speaker (mannerisms, choice of words, themes)? The Nazi salute ?Sieg heil (Hail victory)? is used often in the film. What ?victory? is being celebrated here? It would be another five years after the film appeared before Germany invaded Poland and initiated World War II. Should the rest of the world have concerned itself with Germany?s military might as portrayed in Triumph of the Will? Apart from their bad 1930s haircuts, how are Nazi leaders (other than Hitler) portrayed in the film? Until the German invasion of Poland, many people outside of Germany viewed Hitler and his cohorts as harmless buffoons. Does the film strengthen or weaken this interpretation? Again, consider the topics listed above as you watch the film?it is not necessary to address them in your essay but to use them to gather perspective.
WHAT ESSAY QUESTION BASICALLY BREAKS DOWN TO:
In a 3 ? to 4-page essay, choose two or three scenes to analyze and describe in vivid detail. Discuss exactly what the director shows and the results intended.
