Adam Walker

Revised Paper Proposal #2
Philosophy 101-13
Adam Walker
Every person has their own types of faith and beliefs along with their own levels of knowledge. Many philosophers have argued over if these two topics can correlate with each other or not. Pascal and Montaigne both have stated that someone’s faith can be correlated to one’s reasoning and knowledge. Hume and Kierkegaard on the other side have stated that they are two separate ideas that cannot be correlated to each other. Does reasoning lead to faith or the other way around? Can the knowledge of someone differ so much from their faith of what they don’t understand or not know? These are questions that these philosophers have tried to answer and I believe that Pascal and Montaigne have made an argument I agree with. Hume and Kierkegaard both have great reasoning and it makes sense to have the two topics separate from each other but I also argue that without one the other would not be possible to have. We use reasoning to understand the world around us and we do our best to gain as much knowledge as we can but anything that we cannot explain or is out of our area of knowledge we leave it to faith to fill in gaps. The history of mankind has shown this time and time again in a lot ways where we gain a lot of knowledge but we always get stuck somewhere so we resolve to faith to explain the rest. Maybe it’s the other way around and all of our faith and beliefs lead us to explore and find more information. Most of us have faith in knowing there’s more information out there that we have not found out yet so there is a small correlation with knowledge and faith.  It could also be a mixture of the two, having faith leads to us finding knowledge and having knowledge leads us to believe in certain faiths of which other people can relate to.

Outline for Paper:
•    Claim: I agree with Montaigne and Pascal in believing that reasoning and faith are correlated together. Faith results from having a certain amount of knowledge and knowledge results from faith leading to explanations.
o    Montaigne and Pascal both agree with reasoning and faith being correlated and Hume and Kierkegaard do not agree with them being correlated
o    The idea of faith and reasoning being able to coexist and interact with each other as 1 rather than them being separate. Knowledge with faith or knowledge vs. faith
•    Reasons/supports: when reasoning falls short faith fills in to solve the rest of the gaps that we can’t fill in. Same thing goes with faith, once you reach a certain point in having faith you begin to gain knowledge and your faith is the cause of that

Helen Of Troy, Limited (HELE)

FINC 3332- NOTES ON RESEARCH PAPER

The project requires you to conduct a complete analysis of a business. You will assume the role of a financial analyst and your task is to advise the company’s investors and creditors about the company’s prospects.

I would like the project write-up to be a readily comprehensible and condensed report of YOUR WORK (i.e., not a detailed compilation of all the information you collected). Accordingly, your write-up should be 10-15 pages in length and you may add an appendix with tables and charts. In essence your paper is a detailed Executive Summary of your research. Please cite any sources of data.

YOUR ASSIGNED COMPANY IS:        Helen Of Troy, Limited (HELE)

Your paper should be organized according to the following sections:
1)    Identify the economic characteristics of the industry. In this section you should gather some background material on the primary industry(ies) in which the company operates. This knowledge will allow you to compare your specific firm with similar companies with which it competes. (15pts)

2)    Identify the company strategies.  Firms establish business strategies in an attempt to differentiate themselves from competitors. Briefly describe the company’s strategy for success and, most importantly, the sustainability of profits generated by the strategy. This information can be gathered from the 10K and Annual Reports. (15pts)

3)    Assess the Quality of Earnings for your company. The main objective is to assess the degree of conservatism in your company’s reported earnings. This assessment should help you to determine how predictable earnings are and the degree of risk inherent in your company’s performance. Typical questions to ask are: a) were there any unusual of infrequent items reported on the income statement?  b) Were there any discontinued operations?  c) Were there any extraordinary items? d) Was there an accounting change? e) What method(s) did your company use to value inventory?) (15pts)

4)    Analyze Profitability and Risk. Use ratio analysis, common-size analysis and cash flow analysis to evaluate the current and past performance of the business and assess its sustainability. You should definitely compare your company to some peers in the same industry (see section 1 above). Comment on your company’s performance trends, problems and strengths. Include an assessment of liquidity, capital structure, debt management and long-term profitability.  (55pts)

King Lear

What you are to do is to write an analysis of something you have noticed in King Lear. What you analyze is up
to you, as long as it is original with you. You are deepening the reading of the play.

Basically, pick anything of interest to you in the book– anything that seems to deserve further research or puzzles you (could be a scene, line, character, stage direction, etc.).

Insight of the first intensity is Dr. Nielson’s way of saying, “Show me something new.” Basically, he doesn’t want someone else’s analysis (aka SparkNotes or repeating what academics say). He wants you to come up with your own interpretations of the literature (supported by examples and scholarly journals) that teach him something about the literature he didn’t notice before.

It’s an extremely open-ended paper. I think as long as you have a firm grasp of the play, supply sufficient evidence, and have a unique idea, you will be fine. Things to consider are character portrayals and even religious subtext.
