Conflicting Viewpoints Essay

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist confirmation bias by seeking out sources that might contradict your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking. This assignment is divided into two (2) parts. In Part I of the assignment, you will read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, review one (1) Website in order to gather information, and engage in pre-writing to examine your thoughts. In Part II of the assignment, you will write an essay geared towards synthesizing your ideas. As author E.M. Forster said, “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”
Part I
Follow the steps below to explore an issue through reading and writing –
1. Read "The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful" by Peter Elbow at http://www.procon.org/sourcefiles/believinggame.pdf. Devise strategies for playing the “Believing Game” and the “Doubting Game,” which are discussed in the Elbow article. According to the article, “the doubting game represents the kind of thinking most widely honored and taught. It’s the disciplined practice of trying to be as skeptical and analytic as possible with every idea we encounter. The believing game is the mirror image of the doubting game or critical thinking. It’s the disciplined practice of trying to be as welcoming as possible to every idea we encounter.”
2. Select one (1) of the issues from ProCon.org that your professor has approved as a topic choice for your essay. Go to www.procon.org, scroll to the list of issues, click on the issue you selected, and read the background information section on the issue.
a. To play the “Believing Game,” read either the Pro section or the Con section on the www.procon.org Website – whichever argument is in opposition to your position on the chosen issue. Consider at least three (3) of the premises (reasons) listed in that section. Apply the “believing” questions suggested by Elbow, such as "What’s interesting or helpful about the view? What would you notice if you believed this view? … In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?"
b. To play the “Doubting Game,” read either the Pro column or the Con column on the www.procon.org Website – whichever argument is in agreement with your position. Consider at least three (3) of the premises (reasons) listed in that section. Apply the “doubting” questions suggested by Elbow, such as the journalistic questions who, what, when, where, why, how.
Part II
Now that you have examined your thinking about an issue by pre-writing about your ideas –
1. Present an argument on an issue by stating your conclusion and identifying your premises.
2. Identify three (3) premises of the argument in opposition to your conclusion, and describe your reactions to these premises, based on the believing questions suggested by Elbow, such as "What’s interesting or helpful about the view? What would you notice if you believed this view? In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?"
3. Identify three (3) premises of the argument in agreement with your conclusion, and explain your responses to the journalistic questions you asked in order to probe these premises, based on the doubting questions suggested by Elbow, such as the journalistic questions who, what, when, where, why, and how.
4. Examine at least three (3) types of biases that you likely experienced when you read the premises on the Pro side of the argument and the premises on the Con side of the argument.
5. Describe whether or not your position on the issue has changed. Indicate whether or not your premises supporting the issue have changed. Explain why or why not.
This paper must:
Thoroughly present an argument on an issue by stating your conclusion and identifying your premises.
Thoroughly identify three (3) premises of the argument in opposition to your conclusion; thoroughly described your reactions to these premises, based on the believing questions suggested by Elbow.
Thoroughly identify three (3) premises of the argument in agreement with your conclusion, thoroughly explain your responses to the journalistic questions you asked in order to probe these premises, based on the doubting questions suggested by Elbow.
Thoroughly examine at least three (3) types of biases that you likely experienced when you read the premises on the Pro side of the argument and the premises on the Con side of the argument.
Thoroughly described whether or not your position on the issue has changed. Thoroughly indicate whether or not your premises supporting the issue have changed. Thoroughly explain why or why not.
Thoroughly follow guidelines for clear and organized writing: included an engaging introductory and thoughtful concluding paragraph; thoroughly address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and detailed supporting sentences.

The Things They Carried

Connected to this idea of truth is the idea of history. How does O’Brien undercut the idea of history as fact in this novel? How does he get readers to question what they read in the newspaper? How does he make it difficult to read an "eyewitness" report or a historical overview of a topic and just accept another person’s conclusion or version of "what happened"? This will become even clearer after watching Two Days in October., write an essay which answers it. This is an argumentative essay, so you need to include a clear thesis which states your point, and the three or four reasons (taken from the story you’re writing about) which led you to your point.

Your paragraphs should be constructed around your reasons, and each should offer examples from the story to prove the validity of your claim, and then a clear and detailed explanation of how and why these examples support the claim in your paragraph.

While this essay must include at least two secondary sources (see Secondary Sources page), the main emphasis is on your own thinking: the research doesn’t determine what you say in your essay — you do. The quotations from literary critics, the author’s letters, interviews, or other books from the time period will support your own ideas.

Requirements
A minimum of 1250 words is required, as are a minimum of two secondary sources (reminder — general encyclopedias, dictionaries, and the primary source itself do not count as secondary sources — though if used, they have to be cited).

A Macroeconomics Perspective

Scenario:
This course uses the CTU Professional Learning Model™ (CTU PLM) to teach students with hands-on, industry-related, problem-solving experiences that model the professional environment and encourage achievements that lead to student and employer success. The CTU PLM is founded on the idea that students learn best by working on real-world, professional projects related to their chosen career fields. By working this way, students develop the expertise to apply conceptual knowledge to get effective results. Through professional learning, students experience the complexity of real-world problems and learn to select an appropriate approach to a problem that has more than one solution. This method of learning is called Problem-Based Learning (PBL). PBL assumes that you will master content while solving a meaningful problem in each assignment.
Throughout the course, you will work with a scenario in which some basic, background information is provided about a company. (This information could apply to any company that provides products or services of this sort in general.) You have a role in the scenario; that is, you are part of the story. The dialogue in each assignment presents the problem that must be solved. It is up to you to respond to the problem and submit a deliverable that will be graded.
Refer to the following scenario as you progress through the PBL process.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Scenario: AutoEdge
AutoEdge is a leading national automotive supply company located in Detroit, Michigan. Founded by Jonathan McAlister in 1976, the company specializes in engines and transmission parts and has been supplying products to the three largest U.S.-based automakers for over 30 years. AutoEdge’s name is known by customers and leaders in the automotive industry for quality, dependability, and reliable products. In fact, despite the extra cost that is added to the automobiles, consumers appreciate the AutoEdge brand name and often make purchases because of it.
In 2005, AutoEdge’s board of directors decided that the company needed to make some drastic changes because of the high cost of labor, rigid American regulations, and increased competition from other engine and transmission part suppliers. Their solution was to gradually close all manufacturing operations in Detroit and begin outsourcing to a well-known factory in South Korea. The board reasoned that this change would allow the company to compete with the growing industry, meet the automotive manufacturing demands, and increase company profits. Some board members were skeptical about the move, however, because AutoEdge had built a reputation for high-quality, detailed craftsmanship, and they feared that transitioning the manufacturing operations overseas would cause quality to diminish.
For the next 5 years, this strategy proved successful. The company showed signs of financial growth and company profit.
However, in 2010, the company was found guilty of supplying products that failed quality tests. As a result, millions of automobiles had to be recalled. The recall was highly publicized, and the issue of poor quality products impacted negatively on American automotive companies. AutoEdge’s $51 per-share stock has fallen to $4 per share, and brand acceptance has come under scrutiny among even its most loyal customers. Although some economists blame these negative effects on the products, others believe that it had to do with the termination of AutoEdge’s Chief Executive Officer, Fred McFadden.
Lester Scholl, Chairman of the Board of Directors, has called an emergency meeting to discuss AutoEdge’s short-term and long-term strategies. Among other things, they need to discuss the possibility of continuing production overseas or returning it to the United States. Lester and others on the board are well-known for being financially conservative and risk-averse. Because the American economy is experiencing high unemployment, low interest rates, low GDP, and low inflation, it might be sensible to make the change. To some extent, they believe that these macroeconomic factors can be used to their advantage. They realize the immediate challenges such as the brand damage, the growing competition, and the financial challenges the company is facing require immediate action. A new strategy must be formulated quickly to save the company from bankruptcy.
You have been hired by AutoEdge’s board of directors as a research analyst. Primarily, your job is to list and describe some of the legal, cultural, financial, and economic factors that AutoEdge needs to consider when deciding to either stay in South Korea or return to the United States. Because Fred McFadden was recently terminated, you will work directly with the board until a new CEO is named.

Additional Information: Lester Scholl, Chairman of the Board at AutoEdge, told you during your interview for this job that the company has been floundering since product quality issues caused millions of automobiles to be recalled. He’s phoned this morning to explain what he wants you to focus on initially.
"So have you settled in to your office?" he asks.
"I have," you say. "I think I have everything I need. What can you tell me about my first assignment?"
"I’m glad you’re eager to get started with work," he says. "The board is considering several proposals in response to our situation, and we need you to create a list of the legal, cultural, financial, and economic factors that AutoEdge needs to consider about the location of our manufacturing operations. Most members of the board aren’t familiar with this aspect of the business, so we want you to briefly describe the factors you list, rank the factors, and explain your reasoning. Be specific when you explain so the board understands your rationale."
"Do I need to conduct the research, as well?" you ask.
"We just need you to list and describe the factors at this time," he explains. "You don’t need to actually do the research."
"I can do that," you say. "When do you need it?"
"Send it to me by the end of this week so I can review it before the rest of the board gets copied," he says.
"No problem," you say. "Can you give me an idea about how detailed you want me to be?"
"I don’t want it more than 800 words," he says. I’d say." "OK, I understand" you say. "Thanks for your call."

Analysing classroom discourse using a multi-layered framework

For this assignment, I will upload some files that I would like you to have a look at as they will be useful.
One of the files, named assignment tutorial, contains very important tips that should be borne in mind when writing this assignment and some useful questions.
Another file contains the assignment rubric.
The file named coding framework contains useful codes that can be used in analysing the discourse.
The file named Analysing cultural models is about an article written by my tutor and it can be used as an example in analysing the data of this assignment using the multi-layered framework.

Regarding the structure of this assignment, I would like you to write an introduction of about 250 words in which you present:
1/General information related to the assignment, such as Vygotksy’s theory as the rationale for our focus on classroom talk, different types of classroom talk and their effect on students’ opportunities to learn. 2/ the purpose of the assignment and the argument

Then, I would like you to start with the first part of the assignment (1350 words) which is about analysing the data using the multi-layered framework. In this part, I would like you first to explain what is meant by the multi-layered framework (150 words). You can find a clear explanation of it in the article named analysing cultural models that I will upload. Then I would like you to start analysing the data by first analysing the transcript. In analysing the transcript, use some of the codes found in the file named coding framework that seem to be relevant to the analysis and do not forget to refer to line number. Then analyse the teacher interview data thematically to investigate emerging categories (themes) which she uses to describe her intentions behind her communicative behaviour in the classroom. Lastly, apply the third layer of analysis. (Please, do not include the transcript or the interview data in the essay, I will put them in the appendix as they are not included in the word count of this assignment)

Finally, I would like you to start with the second part of the assignment (600 words). In this part, I would like you to reflect on and offer critical analysis of the multi-layered framework-outlining its value to the teaching context. ( My teaching context is an English as a foreign language classroom. In this context, I teach English to Arab learners
