Attached is one i previously did but now i have to write a rewrite: these are the instructions: The purpose of the document analysis is to allow students to learn, practice, and showcase their skills in interpreting original historical documents. What are primary sources? Primary sources are original records created at the time historical events occurred or well after events in the form of memoirs and oral histories. Primary sources may include letters, manuscripts, diaries, journals, newspapers, speeches, interviews, memoirs, documents produced by government agencies such as Parliament or the Office of the Prime Minister, photographs, audio recordings, moving pictures or video recordings, research data, and objects or artifacts such as works of art or ancient roads, buildings, tools, and weapons. These sources serve as the raw material to interpret the past, and when they are used along with previous interpretations by historians, they provide the resources necessary for historical research. Adapted from: https://www.lib.washington.edu/subject/History/RUSA/ Historians are always trying to discover both the meaning and the significance of a piece of historical evidence. We are trying to reconstitute what that document might have meant (or how it might have been understood) by the historical actors in that era. By significance, we attempt to relate how that evidence contributes to a particular interpretation of past. Therefore, a good document analysis paper will focus upon both the text itself (with attention to the specifics and nuances of language used) and the context (the broader picture of the history of that period that informs the document). It is this dual approach that separates the methods of historians from those of other disciplines, such as literary criticism or positivist social science (sociology or political science). Additional supplemental readings can also be examined to assist in writing the essay. Adapted from https://www.swarthmore.edu/SocSci/bdorsey1/41syl/docanal.html using this primary document b. The Acadian Deportation – “A Contemporary Acadian Account” -“Summons at Grand Pré” Write a short essay that analyzes the documents and their significance. Be sure that your paper includes the following: *describe the document—not only content, but also the structure, any notable or revealing words or phrases. What type of source is it? *who wrote the document any why? What can you tell about the author or authors, his/her point of view and position in colonial society? *what sorts of bias does the document have that you, as a historian, must recognize and account for? Under what conditions was it written? For what audience? What are its strengths and weaknesses as a source? *finally, and very important—build a historical context for this document. Why is it an important source? In what ways does it connect to specific events, phenomena, or themes of the class? How does it deepen your understanding of incidents or trends discussed in class readings and lectures?
