Painting as a Visual Art in Africa

Instructions
Guided by this module on African culture (food, festivals, the people, visual and performing arts), choose one of the forms of art introduced here to present a project that brings to life the history of Africa as you see it now in one of the current form of the arts. Please use the art of Painting with some interesting African paintings!!
Each student is challenged, driven by African culture (food, festivals, the people, visual and performing arts), to complete a visual project that encapsulates your interests thus far. Some thoughts for presentation are Oral Histories, PowerPoint, Photographic display or YouTube presentation with a narrative. For example: Consider planning and making a meal from one of the regions of Africa that you’ve investigated for guests. Share your journey from your initial investigation to the final meal using one of the online formats suggested. Develop a presentation that is of interest.
To make your content accessible to all of your classmates (including those with visual and hearing impairments), please make sure you write text descriptions for all important images (graphs, charts, infographics, etc) and include closed captions for videos and transcripts for audio presentations. Make sure that you cite all sources properly. If one decides to do a power point, please design it carefully and do not simply copy and paste information into a slide. Make sure if using any of these approaches that the project is visible to all. If narrated make sure that you include text. If using images and or music make sure they are copyright free.

Language Errors analysis for Non-native speaker

For this project you need to write a paper of 5 to 6 pages (double-spaced, font 12) that describes and analyzes the grammar mistakes in the speech of a non-native speaker. You need to select a non-native speaker of English (preferably somebody who is not fluent in English) and meet with him/her several times to establish a conversation that help you identify some grammatical mistakes that this person makes. Persistent mistakes in the language of a non-native speaker are called errors.
In the first part of the paper you should provide some information on the language background of the non-native speaker and the way in which he/she has learned English.
The second part should consist of examples of the grammar errors you have observed in context i.e. you should write phrases or sentences from the non-native speaker’s speech that you noticed to contain grammar errors.
In the third part you should talk about the specific grammar characteristics of the grammatical structures that the non- native speaker has trouble with. You should compare and contrast the grammar structure in the native and target languages. You can ask the student to provide information about their native language grammar or you can find such information in grammar books for that language. For example, if you have noticed that a Russian speaker makes a lot of mistakes in the use of the English articles (the use of “the” and “a”) you should ask them to explain how this category is expressed in Russian. In some cases there might not be a corresponding category in the native language of the speaker. However, there is always a different way to express the same grammatical category. You should describe it to the best of your understanding.
In the last part of the paper you should analyze the non-native speaker’s mistakes in light of what you have learned about the grammar of their native language i.e. you should focus on the native language interference. Finally, provide some exercises or suggestions for teaching strategies to help the non-native speaker learn to use the grammatical structure correctly.

Performance in the Professions

We think of performance as entertainment and art, but the fact is that people are performing throughout our social world. In professional situations, people play roles, present a carefully prepared image to others, say well-planned words, employ special props and costumes, and use space in a special way to achieve a desired effect on others. Looking at your own major area of study or career path, identify ways that people in your field perform. In a short written response (1000-1500 words) describe this performance by answering the following questions: 1) What roles are played and why? 2) Are their special clothes worn or particular props used? 3) Are some words or phrases “scripted” and why? 4) What spaces are set up to make an impression on the “audience”? 5) What is the overall desired effect of this professional performance?
