Measures of Organizational Performance

Measures of Organizational Performance

When you are assigned a task, what do you do first? Do you think about evaluating and planning what to do or do you just jump right in and get to work? Many of us don’t have much time to plan, or at least we don’t think we do. Some find planning boring and prefer to just get started without a second thought. Strategic planning is preparing for the future. It is deliberate, purposeful, and thoughtful. Some individuals do not realize how vital planning is to their own success or to that of their organization.

In this Discussion, you will select a health care organization and examine its performance, analyzing how strategic planning and marketing may affect that organization.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review this week’s Learning Resources, especially Jennifer Wilkerson’s discussion from this course’s Interactive Media.

• Analyze the Hospital Competitor Performance document that provides further information (sample indicators of performance) in reference to Waldenville profiles and choose one of the health care organizations from this document as the focus of your work in this discussion. Refer back to and read the Waldenville profiles

Post by Day 4 a description of two measures of organizational performance you would recommend for the health care organization you selected. Then, analyze how these measures advance the interests of strategic planning and marketing for this organization. Make sure to use the Interactive Media to support your analysis.

Support your work with specific citations from this week’s Learning Resources and/or additional scholarly sources as appropriate. Your citations must be in APA format

Pattern, Design, and Strategy

GOAL: Build on your work with your business model canvas by discussing the patterns, the design, and the overall business strategy that it illustrates.

Introduction: Using the Osterwalder and Pigneur text as a resource (coupled with the other resources of the course), examine and discuss the observable patterns, designs, and strategies seen in your business model. You should also integrate metaphors (Morgan?s) and framing (Bolman & Deal) into the discussion of your organization/business. This paper will serve as an investigative tool to inform you further about your business model so that you will be prepared to comprehensively diagnose/assess your model and propose recommendations in your final project for the course. You could say that this week?s work lays the groundwork for moving into the substantive diagnosis and assessment expected in your final paper. You may also benefit from conducting an Internet search of the Business Model Canvas to become comfortable with how it works, particularly in the investigation of patterns, design, and strategy. There are also various YouTube-type videos on the web that demonstrate the use of the canvas for this phase of your work with your canvas.

Instructions: Write a 600-750 word paper that presents your conclusions about the pattern(s), design(s), and overall business strategy depicted by your canvas. Metaphoric and framing applications should also be discussed. The paper should be written in third person and is not reflective (first person not acceptable). A title page and references page with a minimum of three sources is required (no abstract needed).

EVIDENCE & CRIMINAL PROCEDURE (in Australia)

AUSTRALIAN EVIDENCE & CRIMINAL PROCEDURE

Note:
1. Please note you are to use Australian-based sources for this research essay. NO AMERICAN SOURCES.

2. Referencing must be based on the Australian Legal Citation

Question:

The unfairness discretion embodied in s90 Evidence Act (NSW) 1995, is limited to admission evidence.

In addition to the so-called s90 Discretion, s138 Evidence Act also provides the Court with the ability to exercise its discretion to exclude admission evidence – on the basis that the manner in which the admission was obtained was somehow unlawful or improper.

Critically discuss how the s90 Discretion is currently viewed and applied by the Courts and whether you think there is any utility in the retention of s90, as it currently stands.

You should reflect upon the following materials and authorities when addressing the topic:
• Em v the Queen (2007) 232 CLR 67
• R v Em [2003] NSWCCA 374
• Uniform Evidence Law – ALRC Report 102 (2006)

** Your research should not be limited to these resources alone.

Your response should attempt to:

a. Explain the various lead authorities on the issue of the application of s90 and its interplay with s138, by examining the reasoning and analysis in the respective decisions. (There is no need to recount the facts)

b. Provide a critical evaluation of the perceived utility of s90 as well as a reasoned discussion identifying any potential detriment and / or benefits that may flow from the repeal of s90.

c. Explain your reasoning why you would / would not support the retention of s90 (with reference to your critical evaluation of its utility)

Professor’s Further Instructions:

Please be advised that this assignment should be approached along the lines of a Research Essay. As such, it will need to be in an essay format (not dot point or Q&A – however the appropriate use of headings is encouraged). You will also need things like Introductions and Conclusions. Please avoid using the First Person when writing.

I am not particularly fussed as to how you structure your assignment, as long as it conforms to the usual requirements of good academic writing. Grammar, expression, clarity of argument etc are all import in this regard.

It is strongly suggested that you do not limit yourself to only talking about the cases and the legislation. A major part of the exercise is for you to critically evaluate whether s90 still has a place in the law. Obviously, whatever position you arrive at, it will need to be supported by a well-structured and justified argument. As part of this you are encouraged to look at the interplay of the relevant sections within the Act (both regarding Admissions as well the exercise of Judicial Discretion to Exclude Evidence) and reconcile that against the Authorities dealing with s90.

A good assignment should:
1. address all the main issues raised by the question and engage in a critical analysis;
2. demonstrate ability to interpret the task, answer questions and clearly communicate understanding;
3. demonstrate ability to structure a coherent analysis and argument, logically ordered, and well-supported by your reading and research;
4. demonstrate ability to read, understand, distil and explain legislation and the various authorities;
5. demonstrate creative and critical thinking about the law and issues raised;
6. be written clearly and concisely with correct use of grammar and spelling; and
7. use a clear and consistent citation method, honestly acknowledging the sources of law and your ideas.

Succession Planning

* “There are two schools of thought on talent development within organisations. The first school of thought contends that talent development is evolutionary and happens ‘by itself’ based on needs of the environment. In such cases, succession planning is desirable but not essential.

The other school of thought is that talent development is a result of a sustained effort aimed at undertaking a strategic choice for developing talent. This involves developing talent on the basis of having a comprehensive, general instructional plan that supports achievement of strategic business and HR plans. Such a plan requires succession planning to be carried out effectively as a basic necessity.”

Prepare a report in which you explore both the schools of thought discussed above, and then present (and justify) your own position.

Provide examples of talent management interventions and succession planning programs (case studies) to illustrate the points you are making. When you refer to an example, provide enough details about the person / organisation so that a reader who does not know the person can understand the point you are trying to make.

Make sure to provide a definition of succession planning in the introduction of your report.

Assignment Instructions
This assignment is based around the experiences of a fictional university student called Eva. read the transcript, to learn more about her situation. Once you have done this, please answer the question below. 1,500 words.

Transcript
Hi, my name is Eva, and I am 24 years old. I live at home in Camberwell with my partner Scott, and our Golden Retriever Fin. We’ve just moved down here from Brisbane for Scott’s work.
I grew up in rural Queensland, where my mum and dad own a strawberry farm. I always enjoyed school and did pretty well. In year eleven I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I had many surgeries and several rounds of chemotherapy. It was a pretty tough time but my family and school friends were a wonderful support. I think my positive attitude also got me through. Even so, with all the treatment I wasn’t able to complete my HSC and dropped out of school to focus on getting better.
After 18 months my cancer went into remission and I was able to get back into life. I still have some ongoing health issues though. Apparently high-dose chemotherapy can be ototoxic, which means that the drugs they use to treat the cancer can damage your ears. In my case, they have caused permanent damage to my hearing and my balance. I still get episodes of bad dizziness at times. I also have a severe sensorineural hearing loss. I wear hearing aids, which help a little. But I still have a lot of trouble hearing, and rely mostly on lip-reading. I can still speak of course. Before we moved I was taking classes in Auslan (sign language) and I’d like to continue with these here. I’d also like to connect with the Deaf community, but I’m quite shy and my signing is still very slow.
After I recovered from my cancer I completed my HSC at the local TAFE, and worked part-time as a waitress. I found studying quite hard. I was getting tired very easily, and found it hard to concentrate in class. My TAFE teacher gave me a really hard time when I submitted work late or struggled to keep up – she thought I was lazy. About six months ago I saw a specialist and was given a diagnosis of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, which you might know as “Chronic Fatigue Syndrome”. I was glad to get a name for the symptoms I had, but I am still very confused about this disorder. I don’t know how I should be managing it, or whether it will get any better. I also don’t know if there’s any support out there for this condition.
Scott and I are still finding out feet here in Melbourne. I think things will be easier when we make some friends. I really miss my parents and wish they could visit, but it’s hard for them to leave the farm for long. Travelling tires me out too.
I have just been accepted into the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Environmental Management and Sustainability) at the Burwood campus of Deakin University. I’ve always been passionate about environmentally sustainable design, and one day I’d like to work as a sustainability consultant for an architecture firm. I’m going to do the degree part-time, and try to find some work. This is my first time studying at University so I’m pretty nervous! I don’t know how I’ll cope with the workload, and what kinds of supports I might need. I want some strategies so I can get off to a good start! I hope you can help me.

Assignment Question
With reference to the literature, identify the main challenges facing Eva as a student with a disability, and describe potential ‘solutions’, such as strategies, resources, and changes needed to make the university environment an inclusive one for her.

In your answer you should:
• Provide a definition of inclusion, with reference to the literature. When discussing Eva’s inclusion, consider the range of university-based activities that are undertaken as a student, including enrolment and administration processes, orientation, learning and assessment (lectures, tutorials, laboratory and field work, Cloud use and using the library), travel to, from, and around the campus, and Eva’s social life at uni.

• Provide an overview of Eva’s two health conditions (sensori-neural hearing loss, and myalgic encephalomyelitis).
• Describe Eva’s rights as a student with disability, with reference to relevant legislation and policy.
• Use the ICF framework as a guide to help you identify potential barriers and facilitators for Eva’s participation at university, relating to:

o her body structures and functions
o her social environment
o her learning environment
o other personal factors.
