A policy analysis of “The case for change (2003)

In the assignment you should consider:
 The source, scope and expected outcome (or outcomes) of the policy.

 The context of the policy and its evidence‐base (or likely evidence‐base).

 The context within which the policy has been implemented, is being implemented, or is being
proposed for

implementation, including any unanticipated outcomes.
Additional Guidance
Below is a potential structure for the

assignment which you may find useful. You are not required to follow this structure; the suggested words counts are also

only indicative. It is your task to determine the word count balance that best allows you to demonstrate the Masters‐

level “Typical Performance Indicators” set out in the MSc Education Programme Handbook (available from the MSc Education

Admin Blackboard).
Introduction (500 words)

 Identify the policy that you have selected as the focus for your critical analysis.

 Set out your statement of purpose in your assignment and identify the main parameters and key
terms.

Theory/methodology (600 words)

 Identify a theoretical construct that you can use for your critical analysis (for example, if you are
analysing

‘knowledge’ in a curriculum document, you might identify various ‘types’ of ‘knowledge’).

 Set out your methodology for your policy analysis.
Policy Analysis: context, text, consequences/implications (2,400

words)
In conducting a critical analysis of your selected policy (or set of policies), you ae likely to undertake some

or all of the following:
 Identify the antecedents and pressures leading to the development of the policy; you might consider to what extent the

policy builds on, or breaks with, previous policy.

 Consider critically the evidence‐base on which the policy was developed, or is being developed.

1
 Identify how the policy text is articulated and framed, what it aims to do, what values are contained within the

policy, whether such aims are explicit or implicit, whether it requires action, and if so what action and by whom, and

so on.

 Try to make clear the links between your policy analysis and the consequences/implications of the policy for education

practice.

 Adopt a critical stance of the extent to which the policy aims have been, or are likely to be, achieved.

 Consider critically any existing evidence‐base for the extent of impact of the policy. If appropriate,
you may want to

consider critically whether some aspects of the wider societal changes taking place at the same time have affected the

extent to which the policy was, or may be, successful in its implementation.
Conclusions and Recommendations (500

words)
 Summarise the main conclusions of your policy analysis.

 Discuss the extent to which you think you have achieved your intended purpose for the assignment
and whether or not

additional forms evidence would be beneficial (and what these might be).

 Make some recommendations about how the policy could be developed and/or implemented,
referring to relevant sources

(in addition to the policy document you have analysed) as appropriate.

(Nursing Informatics) Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum

To prepare:

1.Review the information in Figure 6-2 in Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.
2. Develop a clinical question related to your area of practice that you would like to explore.
3.Consider what you currently know about this topic. What additional information would you need to answer the question?
4. Using the continuum of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, determine how you would go about researching your

question.
5. Explore the available databases in the Walden Library. Identify which of these databases you would use to find the

information or data you need.
6. Once you have identified useful databases, how would you go about finding the most relevant articles and information?
7. Consider how you would extract the relevant information from the articles.
8. How would you take the information and organize it in a way that was useful? How could you take the step from simply

having useful knowledge to gaining wisdom?

To complete:

Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following:

Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data,

information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific.
Identify the databases and search words you would use.
Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge.
Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the

wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search.
Turn in to turnitin for review and grading.

Paranormal Activity 2: what exactly does the demon want from Katie? Does it ultimately get what it wants?

Questions for Paranormal Activity: 1) In P1, what exactly does the demon want from Katie? Does it ultimately get what it wants? 2) Why is Micah such a big jerk in Paranormal Activity? Why doesnt Katie just leave him for a better choice in boyfriends? 3) Why does Katie allow Micah to film her in the bathroom when its clear that the demon lives in the attic?

Why doesnt Micah put the cameral in the attic after discovering thats where the demon lives? 4) Why dont Katie and

Micah just leave their home after the demon starts bothering them? I know the psychic said that it wouldnt do any good,

but he also states that hes not an expert on demons. Shouldnt they at least check out into a hotel and see if it

confuses the demon? 5) What does the demon communicate through the Ouija board? Is fire itself a form of communication?

6) Who edits the many hours of video footage that Micah shoots, and then puts it back together to form the film itself?

7) For crying out loud, why dont they call the police? Or the FBI or CIA? I assume that either one of those agencies

would love to investigate the presence of a demon on U.S. soil!

Introduction to Course Project

In this first component of the Course Project, you formulate questions to address a particular nursing issue or problem.

You use the PICOT model—patient/population, intervention/issue, comparison, and outcome—outlined in the Learning

Resources to design your questions.

To prepare:

Review the article, “Formulating the Evidence Based Practice Question: A Review of the Frameworks,” found in the

Learning Resources for this week. Focus on the PICOT model for guiding the development of research questions.
Review the section beginning on page 75 of the course text, titled, “Developing and Refining Research Problems” in the

course text, which focuses on analyzing the feasibility of a research problem.
Reflect on an issue or problem that you have noticed in your nursing practice. Consider the significance of this issue

or problem.
Generate at least five questions that relate to the issue which you have identified. Use the criteria in your course

text to select one question that would be most appropriate in terms of significance, feasibility, and interest. Be

prepared to explain your rationale.
Formulate a preliminary PICO question—one that is answerable—based on your analysis. What are the PICO variables

(patient/population, intervention/issue, comparison, and outcome) for this question?

Note: Not all of these variables may be appropriate to every question. Be sure to analyze which are and are not relevant

to your specific question.

Using the PICOT variables that you determined for your question, develop a list of at least 10 keywords that could be

used when conducting a literature search to investigate current research pertaining to the question.

To complete:

Write a 3- page paper that includes the following:

A summary of your area of interest, an identification of the problem that you have selected, and an explanation of the

significance of this problem for nursing practice
The 5 questions you have generated and a description of how you analyzed them for feasibility
Your preliminary PICOT question and a description of each PICOT variable relevant to your question
At least 10 possible keywords that could be used when conducting a literature search for your PICOT question and a

rationale for your selections
