A. Introduction Sentence 1: The first sentence should give a proper citation to the article you have just read and mention the topic dealt with in the article. Sentence 2 -3 or 4: Here, you will write a brief summary of what you have read (just a short one). Sentence 4 or 5: This is the thesis statement. Here you agree, disagree, identify, evaluate or discuss. The thesis is the focused statement of your response. It should include your position and the two focus points you would like to discuss. Example: Author’s claim/article’s topic/main idea: Birth order affects the likelihood of holding executive/managerial positions in the future (i.e., older children are more likely to hold managerial positions). Thesis: While it might be true that many in executive positions are older children, the author ignored two other important factors, namely gender and culture. B. The body The body should contain paragraphs that provide support for your thesis. Each paragraph should contain one idea. Topic sentences should support the thesis. The topic sentence should refer to the article’s topic/main idea and should present the focus point mentioned in the thesis. Example: Firstly, the author did not take into account the role gender may play in having someone reach an executive position in the future. • Ideal paragraph structure would look like: Topic Sentence Paraphrase of the author’s point you would like to discuss Your response: a. Agree/disagree/evaluate b. Elaborate/explain a. With parts/phrases (evidence) taken from the article (paraphrased) c. Provide an example or real-life application • The paragraph could also be structured as follows: Topic Sentence (with the focus point you would like to discuss) Your response: a. Agree/disagree/evaluate b. Elaborate/explain c. Provide an example or real-life application • The conclusion can be a restatement of what you said in your paper. It can also be a comment which focuses your overall reaction. Finally, it can be a prediction of the effects of what you’re reacting to. Note: your conclusion should include no new information and it is optional for this assignment (encouraged, though).
