You are a writer for a local newspaper, and your editor has just told you that you’re getting your own column and a giant raise, which is amazing, because you’re still a college student. The focus of your column is to offer a weekly critique, where you compare and contrast two like things as a means of informing and persuading your readers. What you choose for your subject is up to you. You can compare two of anything e.g. sport teams, actors, ice cream, movies, restaurants, shampoos, industrial sized ovens–whatever. The catch is that your column has to engage the reader. Otherwise, you will be out of a job and standing in the unemployment line within a week.

Compare and contrast two like things of your choosing. The subject should be something you know about. It should be clear from your opening paragraph, what criteria you are using and which of the two things you prefer and why (This is your thesis idea/purpose and motive). What follows in your column’s body will be a comparison and contrast that persuades and supports the reasoning that drives your preference. In terms of how you organize your ideas, you may use a subject by subject (block by block) approach or a point by point approach. Be sure to utilize some of the other methods of development in your response e.g. example, description, analysis, etc. to make your column more effective and interesting for your audience.
