First and foremost, students are expected to demonstrate critical thought and the ability to execute critical analysis. The essay is presenting an argument; it does not call for a subjective opinion and all of the related elements. This assignment asks for some material already covered in class. While arguments and ideas from class may be used, the majority of the paper must come from the student. Readings from class will be your primary sources. Additional chapters not assigned in class but from the same books may also be used and are recommended. Internet sites such as Wikipedia and IMDB and reviews are not academic sources and should not be treated as so; they can however, be used in a secondary function. The reading materials are: Wyatt, Justin – The Concept of High Concept; AND Schatz, Thomas – The New Hollywood. The Movie for them is “The Lego Movie”. This requires in-text citations and a bibliography. Bibliographies are not to be submitted as separate documents. Bibliographies do not count towards the required page length. Do not use cover pages. Topic: This course is designed to provide the student with a general understanding of the field of Film Studies. This assignment will gauge how far along you are in realizing this goal. Take one of the readings we have already read during this semester. Take one of the films we have already screened during this semester. Write an essay that uses the reading as a basis for analysis of the film. In other words, the argument of your essay will articulate how your chosen film demonstrates, refutes, and/or complicates your chosen article. Notes: Keep in mind the way that the course has been taught: we have approached everything discussed in a wider social, historical, cultural, and political context. We have done so to encourage an interrelational approach. In that sense, this essay is about putting a film and a written text in relation to one another. Which is also to say that you are to demonstrate how well you have synthesized the material. Think of it like clay, or dough for that matter. The more you work it, the more pliable it becomes. The better you understand your materials, the better the end product will be. Papers will be graded according to level of understanding of the material, strength of the argument, and clarity/quality of the writing. The first is explained above, the second is how convincing your case is. The last includes the formal presentation, or as we’ve continually discussed in the class, issues of style. You wouldn’t go to a job interview in sweatpants! Those are the requirement from my prof. For me, most importantly, I need a clear idea (a clear, easy-understanding thesis statement).
