For your final exam, you will be writing a research paper. In this research paper students will conduct research at the library and online to find information on the assigned topic. Using that information, students will write a well-organized, thought out research paper.
TOPIC: Students will research and gather information about the dramatic structure of a play (past and present). You will then choose two of the plays that were read and/or watched in class, “Trifles” [Casebook, p. 967] and “A Madea Christmas” [In class presentation]) to analyze/compare and contrast. You will choose and support your thesis from the research that you’ve done and the plays that you’ve chosen to analyze.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Your paper should discuss what the dramatic structure of a play is and how it has changed/developed over the years (through your research). You will discuss the dramatic structure of the plays that you’ve chosen and where it falls in the timeline of the development of dramatic structure. Your paper should analyze the following:
a. Who is the Protagonist and the Antagonist? What is the main conflict of the play, how does this conflict come about and how is it resolved (traditional play vs. modern play)?
b. Compare/Contrast one or more of the following elements in the plays: Point of Attack, Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action and/or Denouement.
c. Who are the characters of the play and how do they add to or diminish the play’s content?
d. How does the set, lighting, sound and wardrobe, add to or diminish the play’s presentation (traditional play vs. modern play)
e. How are the plays similar and/or different and how do the plays’ structure lend itself to the play itself?
***These statements/questions are meant to help focus you on developing a thesis. Your papers may explore other aspects as well.
2. Papers should be approximately 5 pages, double spaces with 1-inch margins.
