Assignment: For your next essay you will craft a resemblance claim, which is one of the most common types of argument. Specifically, you will compare a recurring concept, Theme or image found in one or two of the American Romantics (Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Melville, Dickinson, Hawthorne, and/or Poe), either pointing out a subtle similarity between them OR a subtle difference between them. This is not a comparison/ contrast essay, so you will not write about several similarities and differences. when crafting a resemblance claim, you write about either a single similarity or single difference in how authors depict a specific concept, theme or image, analyzing multiple textual examples to support your claim. thus, the vast majority of your essay will be a close reading of the essays, chapters, Poems or stories you choose to write about. I have not chosen a topic yet.) there are many concepts/themes/images for you to choose from: the celebration of the soul and/or the body (our spiritual and our material selves), The problem of knowing (how authors depict the unknown or transcedental moments, and/ or how they depict the search for answers- quest, travel and journey imagery), The nature of time and eternity (the role of the past and present in our lives an/ or sea, sky, and horizon imagery), America as a fresh, innocent start vs. America as a repetition of past mistakes (before the fall Eden- like imagery vs. after the fall imagery), the joys of the simple life (anti-materialism and appreciating the commonplace), the importance of self reliance and self discovery, the nature of good and evil (is humanity essentially good or evil?), civil disobedience and non conformity (perhaps Christ-like imagery, the embracing of societal outcasts), questioning societal norms (how authors deconstruct stereotypes, perhaps about gender or race, or breaking boundries, perhaps in how they depict taboo subjects, such as sex).
