You will be writing a short analytical paper on the work of one author studied in class. You will focus your discussion on two pieces from that author’s cannon. Here are your selections: Ernest Hemingway: “Hills Like White Elephants” and “The Short Happy Life of Frances Macomber” Kate Chopin: “The Storm” and “The Story of an Hour” Langston Hughes: “Song for a Dark Girl” and “Christ in Alabama” Edgar Allan Poe: “The Black Cat” and “The Tell Tale Heart” Your goal is to think about what these two stories communicate and to discuss how they reflect that author’s goals and agenda. I do not want a biography of that author and I do not want a summary. Your discussion must focus on what his/her work does and how it does it. Your introduction must introduce your author by name andestablish the parameters of your argument. (Please use first and last name the first time you introduce a writer. From then on, you way use last name but never first name alone.) It probably is not wise to give a summary of both stories, so you will have to figure out how to introduce them so that your work is not clunky and so that you establish what needs to be established before you launch into your discussion. I suggest that you try to speak globally, but specifically, about the issues addressed so that you lead to a clear thesis. The body of your paper must address your thesis with specifics. It must advance your discussion and it must use the texts to do so. Please remember to ask yourself the following: 1. What have I added that is new to my discussion? 2. How have I advanced my thesis? 3. Have I used appropriate examples to illustrate my point? 4. Have I explained how these examples work in my text? 5. (Please remember that if you end up at the same point that you started, you probably have not done your job and have no broadened your discussion.) 6. Your conclusion must reflect the growth of your thesis. (We will deal more with this in our next paper, but please start thinking about this now.) Grading Criteria: 1. Do you have a thesis that demonstrates both a claim and a justification for that claim? Please underline your thesis for me. 2. Do your paragraphs have topic sentences that guide your paragraph? Are your paragraphs focused? 3. Have you properly introduced your subject so that the reader knows the parameters of your discussion? 4. Do your paragraphs each add something new to the discussion? Does your paper grow in depth? 5. Have you appropriately used the text (quotations) to support your claim? 6. Have you done a grammar and spellcheck? Things to Avoid ( I will be deducting major points if you do not pay attention to these simple requests): 1.?Do not use first or second person in your essay unless it is in a quote ( I or You) 2.?Do not use questions (unless it is a quote) 3.?Make sure the title of the story is put in quotation marks and the first letter of each word is capitalized. 4.?Periods and commas go inside your quotation marks. (When you have documentation, they will go after your quotation, but you are not documenting for this paper, just quoting.) 5.?Please watch your language so that you are objective and scholarly. 6. Do not use the expression “this shows that.” (It shuts down discussion rather that allows space to build on discussion.) 7. ?Do not use the word should (unless in a quote). It sounds as if you are finger pointing and know best.
