In the first section of this course you have been introduced to multiple works of short fiction and the authors who wrote them. For your first essay, you are to answer one of the questions below in a three to four page essay. It is not enough to merely make descriptive statements about the work you choose. You will need to engage the text critically, quote the text directly to back up your claims, and you must have an argument. Option One: Write an essay where you determine the relative success or failure of a character who decides not to conform to the rules and expectations of society in Updike’s “A&P.” Option Two: Write a paper where you propose how the setting enhances the understanding of a story using either Poe’s “Cask of Amontillado” or Jackson’s “The Lottery.” Option Three: Write a paper where you examine how either Chopin’s “Story of an Hour” or Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” illustrate the difficulties faced by women in their respective time periods. Option Four: Explain how an understanding of Puritan religious practices (predestination, public confession of sin, etc.) and/or Puritan culture (town structure, church as meeting area, etc.) enhances a reader’s understanding of Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown.”
