In modern-day culture, much of what we learn about history comes from films and TV programs which help students visualize historical events. However, movie and TV producers are more interested in providing entertainment than concentrating on historical accuracy. This exercise is constructed to help students critically analyze historically based films for accuracy. The film you are to watch for this class is Hotel Rwanda. This video can be rented from video stores. A copy will also be put on reserve in the JSCC Library for you to view, but you will only be able to view this copy in the Library. Although this movie concentrates on a time period outside of our course of study, the excercise is applicable to Historical Research Methodology. In this movie, Paul Rusesabagina, the main character in the film played by actor Don Cheadle, uses his influence as the manager of the Mille Collines hotel to save 1,260 Rwandan Tutsis from being slaughtered during the 1994 Rwanda genocide. This assignment is meant to teach the methodology of film critique for historical accuracy. After viewing the film you will be expected to write a 300 word critique – an academic paper using MLA format (use the google scholar, and click the tab MLA Formatting)- that evaluates the historical accuracy of the film. This critique should be based on the following questions: 1. What seems to beaccurate in the film? What sources are you using to assess accuracy? 2. What liberties does the film take with the past? Why? 3. Is the film primarily entertainment, or is it really trying to work within the historical time period? How can you determine the film maker’s intention? To help you answer these questions, you should read this scholarly article The Rwandan Genocide (make sure you cite it correctly). 4. What, if any, current-day point is the film trying to make?
