5. CRITIQUE OF GOTTMAN & SILVER (1999) – (10% of GRADE). Students must read the entire book and submit a critique by the deadline listed on the syllabus both to Blackboard email and a hard copy in class. This assignment is designed in part to advance your critical thinking skills. You are to write a 5-7 page (not including the required cover page, abstract, and reference pages) critique of the book in APA style (however, you may use the first person “I”). The critique should: 1) Provide a brief summary or overview of key concepts, and what you learned; 2) Discuss strengths of book and what you liked; 3) Discuss weaknesses of book and what you did not like, was not clear, etc.; 4) Explain how you will utilize Gottman in your work with couples, or why you will not incorporate Gottman in your couples therapy, and what method/theory you will use instead (discuss only models that were learned in this course: Structural, Bowen, Solution-Focus, Narrative FT models) and why you will use other model(s) instead. Then provide an overall summary of the book and the major tenets of the theory or approach. Then evaluate the work by discussing strengths and weaknesses of the approach and the book. Discuss your objective opinion of the book and the theory’s strengths, and then its weaknesses. Give evidence by using examples or concrete explanations to back up your statements. Make sure your conclusion is a solid summary of the paper, and includes your final opinion about the book. You must have a cover page, abstract (that summarizes what you will cover in the paper), an introduction and conclusion, and a reference page (even if you only use the book you are critiquing).
