You will videotape the lesson and experience and make the video available to the class via YouTube. Formational Experience Guidelines & Hints I wanted to give some further information on the Formational Experience Assignment… 1)Why? You have thus far been working on learning about and incorporating spiritual disciplines into your life, this assignment will show that you are able to help others engage in formation. Hopefully the passion and experiences that you have had will be contagious for those you minister to and with. 2)Who? As I said in my opening video, your ministry context is unique to you. Some of you are in full time professional ministry positions, others are volunteering to lead Bible studies, small groups, etc. Some are leading their family or have a group of friends or co-workers that see them as a spiritual influence-we all are ministers and we all are leaders most of us aren’t paid for it. Who in your life can benefit from learning about and experiencing spiritual formation? 3)How? Break down the experience-this should not be 1 hour of you talking to your web cam! This needs to involve you and at least one other person. You don’t need to video them for privacy reasons, but I should see/hear you interacting with them. If I were doing this assignment-I would spend about 10 to 15 minutes going over a spiritual discipline (Barton & Calhoun) information as well as sharing from my own experience. This will probably lead into a Q & A time as they try to understand. Then I would spend a half an hour allowing them to experience the discipline, be creative here! Don’t just say, “read this Scripture”, allow them to experience several ways of reading Scripture. Don’t just say, “be silent”, give them some tools to make that time productive. Then I would spend 10 to 15 min sharing about what they received from God through the experience, what worked, what was difficult, and how they might incorporate this discipline in their life moving forward. A time of prayer at the beginning and end…I think you will find that time goes quickly when you aren’t the only one talking. This doesn’t mean you just “wing it,” but you don’t need to have an hour long sermon or lecture. The goal is to expose others to spiritual disciplines and to hopefully inspire them to want continue growing in Christlikeness…
