Violence in Nursing and its negative effects on the workplace
Healthcare workers are at high risk for experiencing violence in the workplace. Nurses are the most usual victims of violence in the workplace among all other health care workers. Because, they provide direct patient care; they are among physicians and patients, administration and patient care team. Nursing homes, social service agencies, and hospitals have more episodes of violence that result in time lost from work than other professions. Nearly two-thirds of nonfatal assaults occur in the health care industry (Smith, 2002). The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) define workplace violence as any physical assault, threatening behavior or verbal abuse occurring in the workplace (NIOSH, 1996). Although, there are many cases of abuse, yet it is possible to categorize the different types. According to C.J. Huston (2014), there are seven types of violence in nursing. There is nurse-to-nurse, patient to the nurse, an organization to nurse, external perpetrators, violence from colleagues/family members, environmental, and nurse-to-patient (p.203).
Everyone who works in nursing for a few years has an experience of violence, unfortunately. It adds more emotional stress and unhappiness to the compound nursing job. The nurses hear screaming patients, who see a delay of services; nurses experience pressure from supervisors, bullying from colleagues and verbal abuse from physicians. Working in very dynamic and stressful areas such OR, ER, inpatient psychiatric units always gives the chance to be assaulted by patients, families and staff. It remains to be one of the major professional issues.
ANA recognizes that workplace violence is a trouble in the health care industry and works hard to furnish resources to protect nurses. All these varieties of violence might be prevented or decreased if the workplace provides a dependable environment for employees with cameras, alarm systems, emergency exits. Health care providers should deliver an opportunity to report any form of violence to administration to protect their own and avoid further violence in the workplace. In some hospitals, nurses complete the course, how to cope with aggressive patients, abusive strangers and kin members, how to protect from physical and verbal abuse. These all might help nurses to feel more comfortable and safe in the workplace. As a health care worker, we have a right to operate in a safe environment to be able to deliver quality nursing care.
