Read the below forum and write a reply: According to the dictionary memory is defined as the mental capacity or faulty of retaining and reviving facts, events, impressions, or recalling or recognizing previous experiences (Dictionary.com, 2016). Some may say that our memories define who we are and what we have become. Most would tell you that without a memory they wouldn’t be able to live or function in everyday society and life. Our memory is our universe within. Most humans desire to improve our memories each day and fear its loss. I would have to agree our memories are what makes our lives. Would you agree? Our short term memory ability helps us for immediate use. Short term memory helps us remember phone numbers, what we need to pick up at the grocery store, directions to a location we’ve never traveled. Our long term memory ability stores the memories and information that helps with our learned skills such as riding a bicycle, and driving a car. Long term memory ability stores our habits, fifth grade math skills, and most importantly autobiographical memories (who we are and where we came from) (Maguire, 2016). The fear of loosing my memory is catastrophic. Personally, as I sit here and consider what live would be like without having the capability of remembering how I grew up, who my family was, how to perform skills that I enjoy doing almost seem like life would barely exists. I believe our memories are the basis of our culture. in other words, memories make us who we are and why we exist. This for me would be my greatest challenge, not knowing the basis of who I was and where I came from. I couldn’t imagine living every day doing the same thing over and over or reliving the same episode over and over. Even though in the video Clive doesn’t seem bothered when his wife is asking him over and over about his daughter getting married. Afterwards he expresses frustrations, but during the conversation with his wife he seems as though he is almost unbothered by the thought that he can’t remember what was said ten seconds ago (Where Memories Go, 2016). What would life be without have the ability to mentally travel through space and time? Could someone benefit from this? I believe there are certain circumstances in which loosing your memory could be positive. For instance, someone who was abused either mentally or physically as a child or someone who has experienced extreme or severe trauma in their lives. Not all memories are good memories. In a situation where we are connected to bad memories that overwhelm and control our current lives could be detrimental. In this instance I would say that would be a positive example.
