This is my topic Women, Men, and the Bedroom: Methodological and Conceptual Insights That Narrow, Reframe, and Eliminate Gender Differences in Sexuality.
Measures and Procedures List
Below are examples that may help you develop a list related to my topic. In this example, imagine that my review is on rejection or social ostracism. If this were my topic, I would need to discuss how rejection is usually operationalized. This variable is usually manipulated in experimental designs. Further, the main dependent variables are affect (how a person feels), self-esteem, and aggression. Your research topic may be studied using experiments, quasi-experiments, survey/correlational methods, or some combination of these. My list related to rejection is below. Be sure that as you make the list you include citations for the measures and manipulations. This will make things easier when writing my paper.
You should attempt to discuss and list a wide array of measures and manipulations of variables related to my topic.
The assignment should include a citation for each measure or manipulation listed. Please be sure that you list the name of the measure and the author(s) who developed or used the measure/method. If you list a measure provide the name of the instrument and cite the person who created it.
Rejection Manipulations
Cyber ball: This is a computerized game in which the participant is told that they will play ball with two other students. Actually, the whole game is rigged and it will respond the same to all participants. The game will begin by including the participant in the ball toss, and then after three tosses the participant will be excluded from the game (no one will toss the participant the ball). In the control or included conditions, participants will be included in all ball tosses (Williams, Cheung, & Choi, 2000)
Recall and write a story: Participants are asked to recall and write about a time they were rejected or accepted. (Twenge, Baumeister, DeWall, Ciarocco, & Bartles, 2007)
Ignore: Participants are invited to the lab and they are ignored (or accepted) by actual people.*
Make rejection salient: Participants are asked to find words in a word puzzle. Participants are randomly assigned to a rejection or accepted condition whereby rejection related words are in the puzzle (alone, rejected, ignored, ostracize) or acceptance related words are in the puzzle.*
Rejection-Related Dependent Measures
Affect: The positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS) (Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988), the feeling thermometer*
Aggression: Number of zombies killed in a video game*
Rate and pressure applied to a punching bag*
The hostility questionnaire*
Self esteem: Rosenberg’s (1965) self esteem scale
