You are to watch a movie where mental illness is the theme. Then you are to write a 2-4 page paper answering the following questions: What was the plot of the film? Which mental illness was portrayed in the film? Which character portrayed in the movie had the mental illness? What symptoms of the illness does the character/ characters exhibit? How was mental illness and/or the mentally ill portrayed in the film? Were there any inaccuraces in the portrayal of mental illness? If so, what were they? You may choose any film you like – as long as mental illness is a prominent theme in the film. Here are some examples of films where mental illness is portrayed: “A Beautiful Mind” “I Am Sam” “The Grizzly Man” “As Good As It Gets” “One Flew Over the Cookcoo’s Nest” “Fatal Attraction” “Rain Man” “Girl Interrupted” “Copycat” “Three Faces of Eve” “May IMPORTANT PLEASE READ: 1) Keep in mind a movie critique is not a paper about what happens in the movie. Papers that describe only what happens in the movie will have points deducted. 2) In the past, I’ve had students try different “tricks” to help them cut down on the amount that they have to write for the paper. these include: (a)writing in large font sizes, (b) writing in font styles that are large in 12 point font, (c)including really large headings that take up a lot of space, (d) using large margins, etc. please follow the instructions, and don’t try to shortcut the assignment (as a sidenote, most students don’t shortcut, but each semester I have a few who do, this is just a disclaimer for those FEW) 3) ***** Do not plagiarize your critique . Plagiarism is stealing and passing off the ideas or words of another individual or source as one’s own without crediting the source. Recently I have had a lot of students who copied and pasted (word-for-word) information listed on Wikipedia. DON’T DO THIS! It is really easy to identify papers that have been plagiarized. Also, keep in mind that if you copy the words from another source and only change a few words here and there…it is STILL plagiarism. Part of the challenge of writing an original paper is paraphrasing portions of sources that your use to help you write the paper. It can be difficult, but as you progress further in college (to 4-year colleges), you’ll write more papers and will be expected to paraphrase multiple sources. Plagiarized papers will automatically earn a zero.
