You will go to a museum (see below for a list of museums) and write your essay
based on the following requirements:
• Use up to four articles or chapters that we have covered in class (pulling out key
theories, concepts and data) to critically analyze a museum or artistic event (see
below for a list of museums) from a sociological framework. Some topics to
consider (but not limited to this) when you write your essay are: immigration, the social construction of race, hegemony, the relationship between race and/or ethnicity and social stratification.
When you select your theories, concepts or data that you will use in your analysis
of the museum, make sure to read the relevant chapters and articles so you have a
complete understanding of the theories, concepts and data.
• In the articles or chapters that you select, pull out the theories or concepts that are
useful in your analysis. That is, do not summarize an entire chapter/article, only
address the key theories or concepts. As an example, if you decide to use
Kitano’s theory of domination to analyze an aspect of the museum exhibition, DO
NOT briefly define the theory at the beginning of your paper, BUT RATHER,
only briefly define the theory before you use the theory in your analysis.
• With every sentence and paragraph you write, ask yourself if the theories and/or
concepts or data that you are using are really are appropriate for your exhibition?
With every paragraph you write, connect a theory, concept or data (that you
select) to the museum exhibition.
• If you are including footnotes, you can attach them at the end of each page or
have a separate “Footnotes” page before your bibliography.
• In your first paragraph name the museum that you attended,(went to the Jewish Museum New York on November 15th-exhibition : Helena Rubinstein- Beauty is Power, I will attached additional info) describe your
museum experience and list the theories, concepts and the appropriate authors that you will use to analyze the museum visit.
• You conclusion should be no more than three to five sentences.
