Your paper should fill out a debate over a controversial ethical issue, developing more than one side and assessing the plausibility of each. Remember that the interest of thinking through such issues is not only to clarify your own judgments, but also to appreciate how people justify their judgments.

Relativism
Choose a controversial cultural practice and explain how a relativist theory would explain whether it is right or wrong. Then discuss whether Shafer-Landau’s objections to relativism are worrisome problems for a relativistic understanding of the practice you choose to focus on. (Relevant issues might concern moral infallibility, equivalency of moral views, moral progress, moral disagreement, the individuation of culture, and how cultural approval is determined. However, it is better to have a thorough examination of one or two problematic issues rather than cursory examinations of many.)
Do you think a version of ethical relativism is true? How would you articulate the view so that it gets around or responds to the objections we examined in class?
No matter which way you go on the issue of ethical relativism (for or against), please be sure to sympathetically develop the opposite side’s perspective and explain why you are not ultimately persuaded.
