Sook Nyul Choi’s Year of Impossible Goodbyes (1991), Chapters 6-10 In Chapters Six through Ten, Choi continues her memoir after the surrender of Japan to the Allies in 1945 and beyond the end of its occupation of Korea; yet, in terms of Choi’s own life, the condition of living in a war zone goes on, due to new political conflicts. Where and how do you see Choi still facing the kinds of situations usually associated with war? Which of her experiences, in these chapters, are also gender-specific and age-specific—related, therefore, to her being a girl? What qualities of mind and character, as well as kinds of action, do the new challenges demand of her? How do these circumstances require her to do things beyond ordinary expectations for girls?
