You are required to complete a number of tasks which taken together require you to evaluate the strategy of an organisation. You must choose to analyse the case organisation selected by your tutors for this assessment – SunCoal Industries (the link is available on the announcements page). Your assignment needs to address each of the tasks and sub-tasks in turn. The aim of the assignment is to help you gain experience of applying the concepts, tools and techniques that have been introduced in the module to an organisation.
Undertake the following tasks:
Task 1: (1200 words; 40% weighting)
Analyse the impact of the external business and economic environment of your focal organisation that affect its internal strategic choices and performance, in particular evaluating:
Either:
a) the significant macro-economic (PEST) factors affecting the strategic decisions of the firm, using trend analysis,
or:
b) the main sources of competitive forces that exert pressure on the strategic behaviour of the firm within its industry, using Porter’s five forces of competition.
Task 2: (1200 words; 40% weighting)
Focusing on the internal environment of your chosen organisation (or SBU), provide a critical review of its business strategy, and discuss what changes you believe are appropriate going forward.
Task 3: (600 words; 20% weighting)
Reflect on the challenges you have experienced in using the tools and techniques that you have used in tasks one and two to analyse your selected organisation.
