Taiwanese attitude towards American and UK varieties of English Custom Essay

With English gaining a more significant role as an international language, research on intelligibility and/or

comprehensibility of different varieties of English appears to become more important than ever. (Matsuura 2007)

English is no longer a solitude language used simply within native-speakers or that native speakers ceased to be the

only “standard” of all Englishes. The emergence of Englishes is immensely flourishing in many parts of the world. In

Taiwan, Chinese Mandarin is the dominant language, also recognizes English as an international language. Taiwan has a

strong historical alliance with America, with raising of significance of international trade along side with the

trend of studying abroad and working holiday amongst English speaking countries, Taiwanese are exposed to other

varieties of English other than the standard American English. This research paper is designed to explore the

attitudes of Taiwanese English speakers of English towards American English and UK English speech with the purpose to

study the correlation of how certain attitudes are held positively or negatively and the actual status of the

speaker.
For my research, I will play excerpts from UK Toyota advertisements and correspondent American version of the

commercial to 10 Taiwanese English speaker of basic comprehensibility (TOIEC 600 or higher). The survey would

conclude participants’ demographic information regarding age, gender, place of birth, education, current employment

and languages. Second section would participants would be asked to rate their understanding and attitudes towards the

two recordings of English from the most (5 points) to the least (1).
