The Third Wave immigration saw a larger amount of immigrates from Europe coming in at one period of time. They looked at the United States as an opportunity to gain financially to return home in to be in a better position. The Italians came
over and other parts of Southern and Eastern Europe. The settle in the big cities in the United States, looking for industrial jobs. Some of the ways they assimilate the immigrants were to try to change how the look and dress. They also tried to teach them how to be an American with schools as well as encouraging some to change their names to be more American.(Van Cleave) The immigrates themselves undermined the Americanization Progressive efforts because it was making to be “100%” American and to in a way disown the nationality and to change their beliefs and views. The Americanization
they felt was being force on them and going to the extreme of making them, talk, look, act and live a certain way. They feared the mass immigration because a large number of them were coming and not planning to stay. While they stayed they were building their on communities and opportunities such banks, clubs, markets and shops. They all banned together and lived together and build these things and the Nativist feared there were losing their country and eventually lose their power. The quotas came about as a way of keeping track of how came into American and where was they from. So they could stop certain people from certain places from coming into America and to keep the number of people coming in to a minimum.
Race played a factor because it limited the amount of people from a certain race to come into America as the Chinese were excluded altogether. The national origins of the United States are from the Northern and Western Europe.
