First, interview someone doing the job you would someday like to have. This involves finding the person, contacting them and conducting an interview (face-to-face, phone, video, email….). What I’d like you to focus on is going from the point you are now in life to how you can land the type of job you are seeking. Since this is a communication course, I would like you to place an emphasis on the communication skills that are most relevant to that field. For example, if you want to become a doctor, interview a doctor. Ask him/her what type of schooling/experience/credentials they needed to get where they are now. This should help you realize what you need to be doing to stay on track with your goals. What is a typical day at work like for them? What kind of communication skills have been needed? I don’t just want you to provide generic responses like “all of them” or “speaking,” but provide some context, like maybe nonverbal skills when dealing one-on-one with patients but public speaking skills when delivering research findings at conferences and so forth. This is a chance for you to get the insider scoop on the career you are working hard to land. I want you to learn from the experience, so feel free to ask (and include in your paper) anything else about the field you discover.
Next, write a reflection about that experience (2-4 page range double spaced). BE SURE TO FULLY IDENTIFY YOUR SOURCE: full name, job title, where they work. Your paper should reflect on what you learned from this person, NOT written as a transcript (Q&A form). Scores will be determined both from the quality of content (info you gained/revealed) as well as the quality of writing
