I bought a Levi s watch last summer shortly after its entry into the market. The watch is very modern in design; a cuboid body with a square surface. On top of the body is an outwardly embedded Levi s logo. The watch s face occupies the most area on the body, which constitutes two concentric circles. Within the watch-face is a special design; the minute hand is a regular thin, white pointer but the hour hand is a small triangle pointing towards the center of the watch-face, located on the edge of the smaller, inner circle. This makes the inner circle look like the pacman. As time goes by, the pacman turns its head around. The band of the watch is made of a thick layer of soft rubber which gives it a smooth and bald texture. There are two raised Levi s logos on both ends of the watch band. The watch comes in several colors of choice. I was spoilt for choice between the white/red and the baby blue versions. Both stood out for their strong colors. The white/red one was all white with only the inner circle red, which I then figured looked too much like the target logo, so I finally chose the baby blue one. The whole watch is pretty wide with bald edges and thick bands. Since I have thin wrists, it looks a little funny but also fancy on me. The design of the whole watch is simple but distinctive. It caught my eye immediately I noticed it. Although it cost about $150, which was expensive to me, I still decided to buy it without much hesitation. I wear it quite often, unlike some other watches I have which I almost never wear. I like this watch a lot and I think it is a worthy purchase. The technology, material, design, and everything behind this watch is probably a lot less than $150. But the price is set so high and there are still a lot of people willing to buy it. After hearing the price of the watch, my father thought it was a little too expensive. The brand definitely adds a lot to it. If the same watch isn t under the brand of Levi s, it cannot be sold at this price. Although I would still like it, I probably won t think it was worth it. When watches were first invented, only rich people in higher classes had the resources to acquire them. With advancement in technology, mass production of watches made them become ordinary products which everyone could easily afford. Lots of people wear watches every day. Watches are easy to carry around, and they are useful. At first, all watches looked similar. They had round faces; three hands for hour, minute, and second; some numbers or dots indicating time; and leather bands. The second hand characteristically tick-tocked loudly. Designers and craftsmen focused mainly on their functions and much less on the aesthetic appeal. The appearance of a watch is definitely the easier to develop and make a wide ranging variety in comparison to the functioning part. Technology wise, other than the accuracy, the noise pioneer watches used to make has been minimized. There are lots of silent watches in the market today, and some of them make absolutely zero noise. My watch almost makes no noise. Only when I hold it right next to my ear, can I hear a little tick-tock. I won t be bothered by it at all. Digital watches are very popular now. It simply shows numbers so that you don t have to read the hands. A lot of people are not so good at reading old fashioned watches or clocks; the digital watches help them get to know the time more directly. My watch doesn t have those numbers or dots to indicate time. I am therefore usually forced to approximate the time based on the approximate locations of the minute hand and the hour triangle. Sometimes it takes me a while to figure out, but I don t mind it. The minimalism design takes the scales out to eliminate repeating boring patterns on the watch-face, in order to make the watch more pleasing to the eye. Changing market trends have influenced product designs and nowadays lots of products are designed towards the aesthetic mean than their original usage. When customers view a product, especially female customers, the focus is more on how the product looks like but not its functioning. Since most technical products have multi-usages which are way more than what we actually need, sometimes function of one piece of device does not matter that much. The most attractive appearance earns the most attention. Some watches have literary become more of fashion than functional products. After the emergence of cell phones and smart phones, the population wearing watches has rapidly decreased. Now everybody carries their phones with them everywhere, and every phone shows time accurately. Watches have hence become less necessary and somewhat redundant. People no longer wear watch just for knowing the time. Watches already become a type of fashion. I owned my first cell phone when I was in my fifth grade. From then, I almost never looked at a watch or clock if I had my phone with me. I owned a few watches during these years but I hardly ever wore them. I remember buying a Swatch watch some years ago. I liked it very much because it was very pretty. I wore it quite often when I first got it, but over time lost interest and need to wear it. Nowadays I simply buy watches because I like their appearance. This watch definitely didn t exist ten years ago; there weren t even watches similar to it. And ten years later, or in a shorter while, it will no longer be considered fashionable. Products are viewed differently in different periods of time. I was with one of my friends when I was buying this watch. She also picked a watch she liked. We had totally different tastes. Maybe we both liked each other s choice, but not to the extent that we were willing to buy. Every person has his/her individual point of view; it is affected by the time period, background, temporal and emotional components among many other factors. A popular product can represent the temporal society. From it we can tell the technology, value, aesthetic mean, and a lot more. This watch can be a representation of what I like, and I m proud to show it to everyone.
