URBAN AND REGIONAL ECONOMICS

Assume you work for a company that specialises in preparing economic and business reports for private companies and investors. You have been asked to prepare a short business report on strengths and issues of the regional economy of one of the following cities.
Choose one of the following cities and their region:
Birmingham (West Midlands urban area)
Cambridge (East Anglia)
London (Greater London, Inner and Outer London)
Manchester (Greater Manchester)
You have been asked to provide the following:
A brief overview of key descriptive regional statistics about GDP, educational level, employment per industrial sector using the latest 5 years available (20%).
An overview and discussion on strengths and weaknesses of the regional and urban economy, with special attention to local industries, clusters and business sectors (50%)
Your view on future challenges and opportunities for the city/region over the next five/ten years, and of how the regional economic profile may change. For example: which different sectors might become more important for the development of the region? Which aspects may play a more important role in the future? (30%)
Connections among these elements should be emphasized and discussed. Use terminology and concepts from the module when appropriate.
Critically evaluate strengths and weaknesses of relevant theories and concepts from the module when relevant in your analysis. Yet, remember: it is a business report not an academic essay, and so should be written in a report style.
The figures in brackets are an indications of how much of the report should be allocated to each section (a brief introduction would also be nice).
The report should not exceed 1500 words (10% word count leeway). A full bibliography is also required, and you can use a maximum of three tables or figures (in any combination). [The bibliography and tables/figures are not included in the word count.]
The assignment must be submitted via Blackboard only by 12pm on Monday 18th April 2016.
