Introductory Paragraph: – Have a thesis statement – Be as concise as possible *Assume you have my attention

Body Paragraphs – Structure and organization – Organize your argument logically in paragraphs and full sentences – Each paragraph should support your thesis statement – Each paragraph should have one and only one main idea – Each sentence in a paragraph should relate to this main idea – Each paragraph should be an interpretation of the evidence – Analyze the information and relate it to your thesis statement – Do not regurgitate as much information as you can remember – Do not undercut your own argument with “I” statements (I do not know, but…; I believe…; I think…; etc.) – Evidence – Assigned class readings provide you with the evidence on which to build your interpretation – Do not just summarize the evidence *Assume I am an informed reader
3. Conclusion: – Do not introduce new arguments or new evidence in your conclusion – Keep it concise
4. Style and Grammar: – Keep in mind that your essay is in the genre of academic writing. That means that all guidelines for formal writing must be followed. – This must include: – A typed essay – Double-spaced, Times New Roman font with 1” margins – Correct spelling according to standard American English – Correct capitalization according to standard American English – This must not include: – Slang of any type – Contractions – use apostrophes only for possessive nouns [i.e. the theologian’s writing (singular noun), the theologians’ writings (plural noun) witches’ broom (nouns ending in an “s.”)]
5. Citations – Information from readings must be cited *Use the style that corresponds to your major field – Include a works cited page with your essay *Use the style that corresponds to your major field
