The Historian’s Questions:*
1. What strikes you? (Striking)
• This question is wide open. Just tell me what thoughts or feelings you have from
this document. What stands out to you about it?
2. What surprises are in this document? (Surprises)
• Once you have already studied the historical context of this document, what did
you find in the document itself that you did not expect to see? Why not?
3. What puzzles are in this document, which you can solve? (Puzzles)
• Authors/speakers rarely explain all of what they mean. As historians, we draw on
context to understand the meaning of each document. To answer this question,
first identify something within the document which is not fully explained. Then
explain how the context may provide an explanation for the puzzle. (Do not
write about something that is merely absent.)
4. How does this document connect with another document? (Doc Connections)
• How does the text of this document relate to the text of other documents we
have read?
