This will be the introduction to the dissertation. 1. The field of study (i.e the topic and the scope of the dissertation, including why it is important/current topic). The topic is: The attractiveness of the gang and how gang involvement can be reduced. It is of great interest to me as i am from London and have grown up around gangs all my life. I have a young son and i want to do all i can to prevent him form joining a gang. Most research is based in America, more research needs to be aimed on England especially London. 2. The research question, research aims and objectives Research question: Why do young males choose to join gangs? Research aims: To understand why young male living in London choose to join street gangs and what can be done to help reduce or even stop gang involvement. By the end of the project we should have a greater understanding of why young males join gangs and what can be put in place to help reduce gang involvement. Objective: To undertake 3 one to one semi structured interviews of ex street gang members between 20- 25, to understand why they and their peers got involved in street gangs and what they think should have been done and can still be done to stop this. i will be doing research on what is already known about street gangs ie literature for the past 15 years. 3. Summary of the contents and the main arguments in the dissertation to help orientate the reader. Content: will cover a range of different theories ranging from I will be looking at psychological, criminological, sociological theories and a range of many others for explanations to why young people join street gangs.
