-century leadership (1500 words)
Organisations today face significantly different challenges from those of the past, for
example in terms of global recession, climate change, terrorism, international competition,
technological change and more mobile workforces. It seems reasonable to suppose that
operating in such a complex and unpredictable environment will call for new styles of
leadership and new approaches to negotiation.
You are required to write an essay explaining ONE major challenge in the next five years
and its implications for the kind of leadership and negotiation capabilities that they will need
to develop. (You may look at a challenge for one particular type of organisation if you wish.)

? Coherent and convincing identification of a major challenge facing organisations in the
contemporary world linked to leadership process (25%)
? Identification of relevant leadership and negotiation concepts, and insightful application
to the essay topic (20%)
? Evidence of reading from a range of sources; careful referencing (15%)
? Critical and independent thinking (10%)
? Good structure: an effective introduction and conclusion, logical organisation of material,
integration of all sections into a unitary whole (20%)
? Clear expression; evidence of proofreading (10%)

Essay
1. Focus on a key point which is clearly outlined IN THE BRIEF
2. Link, context, to leadership theory, the context you have chosen to focus on, and negotiation
3. Do not describe theory – apply it, evaluate and analyse using evidence you have found.
4. You should consider the process of leadership as well as leadership theory, i.e. structure of the organisation, processes involved, followers and leaders/leadership
5. Consider the internal and or external situation where relevant and appropriate
6. Support claims with research
7. Draw conclusions from the analysis and where appropriate present advice based on the evidence you have presented.
8. Your opinion is only required where you wish to comment on the weakness of a theory or where evidence is poor or weak or lacking in a particular industry or context – in which case you may base your comments on this but consider whether you are able to offer advice in such a situation.
9. You should add criticality to the essay once you have considered the usefulness of the theories to business situation – which are useful why- where are the weaknesses, why? What might be the next step, advice you suggest based on this – is there any support for this?
10. Presentation of the work should be double line spaced, font size 12, Times New Roman or Arial

These are the subject areas its preferred that the essay will be about Women into leadership in an industry or organisation but its fine to choose other subject areas such as technology and its effect on a particular industry.

2. Leadership as a process
Leadership in more recent studies is considered as a process rather than a type of individual with specific characteristics, this session will examine the processes such as influence, the impact of context, goal attainment and will also briefly consider followers. These themes will be developed further throughout the following sessions.

3.and 4 Developments in leadership research : a historical overview
A review of the development of theories and research which have traditionally been used to frame leaders and leadership from trait, behavioural to more contemporary research in transactional, transformational theories.

5. Women in and into leadership – Gender and Leadership
We will consider the role of women in organisations generally, then go on to examine women in leadership positions, consider the differences between men and women in organisations and evaluate the current situation as far as women are concerned and discuss whether anything should/could be done.

6. Leaders, Ethics and Influence
Considering leadership as a process involves how leaders influence individuals and groups in order to achieve organisational goals and further examines the importance of individual and organisational goal alignment.

7. Leadership Skills: Conflict and Negotiation
There are times in business when conflict is present, it is not always negative but can be a valuable way in which to create innovation and move new ideas into the forefront of business activities – in this session we will explore the positive and negative aspects of conflict, how it arises and how negotiation is used in order to resolve conflict.

8. Emotional Intelligence
In this session we will examine the idea of emotional intelligence, what it is, the value to the individual and those they deal with and examine the research in this field.

9. Leaders and Followers
Whilst leaders may determine corporate strategy it is necessary that the workforce are willing, able and skilled sufficiently to meet the goals set out by leaders, in this session we will examine the perspectives of both these groups and consider the issues concerned.

10. Challenges for Leaders in Contemporary Business
As organisations take on new forms moving from the traditional bricks and mortar businesses leaders face a more complex business situation this session will examine the new ways of working, virtual teams and organisations and the changing expectations of the contemporary workforce.
