Crucible Essay: The Crucible Essay is your reflection on an intense transformational experience from your career and how it affected you as a leader. The essay will address how this experience influenced you then, and how it will shape you as a leader as you move into future assignments. Your essay will be approximately three pages long. See the above rubric. Must consist of the following areas:
? Write an essay identifying and describing a personally significant experience or event. Explain how this event challenged you or shaped you as a leader. Justify why it is a significant experience to you.
? Reflect on the experience and explain how it will influence you as an organizational-level leader.
1. Purpose. This essay gives you the opportunity to identify and examine a key transformational experience from your life. Taking the time to reflect on this experience and synthesize it with the leadership lessons will assists in your growth and development as an organizational leader. ADRP 6-22 identifies the necessity for leaders to assess themselves constantly by revisiting experiences to examine what they believe and who they really are. “Self-aware leaders analyze themselves and ask hard questions about experiences, events, and their actions. They should examine their own behavior seriously. Competent and confident leaders make sense of their experience and use it to learn more about themselves.” As a self-aware, adaptive leader, it is important to reflect on what you believe in and why. Through this requirement, you will examine the people and events leading you to be the leader you are today. You should reflect on your core values,
knowledge, training, and experiences to improve your understanding of how your leadership might change as you move from direct leadership roles into organizational leadership roles.
2. Background. Warren G. Bennis and Robert J. Thomas discuss a specific kind of self-examination—that of a crucible experience—in their article, Crucibles of Leadership. They state one of the most reliable indicators and predictors of true leadership is an individual’s ability to find meaning in intense, often traumatic, and usually unplanned experiences in one’s life. They explain: “For the leaders we interviewed, the crucible experience was a trial and a test, a point of deep self-reflection that forced them to question who they were and what mattered to them. It required them to examine their values, question their assumptions, hone their judgment, and, invariably, they emerged from the crucible stronger and more sure of themselves and their purpose—changed in some fundamental way.” This is an important concept and this essay is an opportunity to examine your crucible experience. You should read the article, Crucibles of Leadership, to prepare for writing your paper and understanding the concept of a crucible experience. However, do not let this strict definition of a crucible experience limit your reflection. The intent of this requirement is for you to examine your experiences and determine how they developed you as a leader, what they mean to you now, and what they will mean to you in the future as an organizational leader.
