In this written assignment you will apply ethics theories and literature to an ethical issue from your practice. Select an ethical problem/issue you have experienced in practice for your analysis.
If you are interested in writing about a situation that is not derived from your clinical experience, please consult your teacher.
This paper must use APA 6th edition formatting. The maximum length is five pages not including references or title page. Should your paper be longer than five APA formatted pages, the additional pages will not be graded as part of this assignment.
You are required to use five peer reviewed journal articles from the ethics literature and annotate three of these article using a max of 250 words per article. You may use addition sources to support your writing but the majority of your evidence should come from the peer reviewed journal articles from the literature. Minimal to no use of your text book is encouraged, as your understanding of this content will already have been explored and evaluated in the required reading assignment.
Marking Scheme for Scholarly Paper
Introduction (3/35 marks)
Include a topic/importance sentence, purpose statement and overview of your discussion.
Body of paper (24/35 marks)
a) Clearly describe an ethical issue from your clinical experience. Identify the aspects of this case or situation that make it an ethical dilemma. Use scholarly literature on a similar ethical issue to help you deepen your analysis and explore the central concerns that makes it an ethical dilemma (ex infringement of autonomy, dignity, justice etc). (6 marks)
b) Describe how your clinical setting (where this ethical situation took place) influences the nurses’ ethical practice. Use literature on a similar ethical issue to examine how a nurses’ work context influences nursing practice. (5 marks)
c) Clearly identify one ethical theory studied in class (caring/relational, virtue, feminist, deontology or utilitarianism, etc.) and describe in detail how this theory supports, impacts or brings clarity to the issue you have identified. It is important that you work with the assumptions of the theory you have selected. The theory assists in clarifying the issues within dilemma and helps you to examine possible actions. Use appropriate scholarly sources to support your reasoning. Do not use your class text book for this portion. You should use sources that enable you to learn about your theory in greater detail and to provide new ideas – different from the ideas that have already been provided to you in class. For example, the online encyclopedia provided in the resource section is a good source. (6 marks)
d) Describe how the Standards of Practice from the CNO are implicated in this ethical issue. For example, how was a CNO standard violated in this situation or how can the standard support your ethical nursing practice. (2 marks)
e) Having clearly described the issue and analyzed the situation using ethical theories and the scholarly literature, describe two actions that you would take to resolve the ethical issue/dilemma. Support your actions with a rationale informed by the scholarly literature. Here as well, the literature you select must be written on the same ethical issue as you identified in section a) of the paper. (ex, if your ethical issue is autonomy, the articles must be about actions/interventions that address and promote autonomy) (5 marks)
Conclusion (2/35 marks)
Summarize your paper and offer your critical thinking on how the knowledge gained from writing this paper will influence your nursing practice.
Annotated Bibliography (6/35 marks – 2 marks per article)
Select the three most influential articles used in your paper, annotate them using the following topics and include the annotation in an appendix to your paper:
a) How does the purpose of the article link to your purpose statement?
b) How do the findings/ discussion/recommendation for practice in the article support the development of your discussion/essay?
