In the last assignment, you analyzed three arguments that were made regarding the Keystone XL Pipeline, and how the related to one
another. Now it’s time for you to pick a side!
You will be writing an OpEd piece. You will do some research into the Keystone XL pipeline debate/issue (most of which was done by you and
your peers for the previous assignment) and choose at least three outside sources; one of these sources must somewhat argue against your
position. You will use your outside sources to strengthen your argument. You must be able to show how using the perspective of the
opposing source allows the meanings of the supporting sources to be transformed or seen in new ways – in other words, use that opposing
source in a way that illuminates/sharpens/brings into perspective your supporting sources (and therefore, your opinion).
Your OpEd may be structured in the way the OpEd project suggests; only it will be in MLA format. You will take pointers and suggestions
from the assigned readings. Focus on one issue in your OpEd and have one clear objective. It should be between 700 and 1000 words
(although OpEds range from 400 to 1200 words at times). You will develop your issue in a simple essay format, with an introduction, three
key points and a powerful conclusion. Keep your piece concise and organized.
In this project, I will not comment on MLA at all. At this point, you should have it mastered. If it is not to standard, you will lose
significant points. The same holds true for grammar and punctuation – be sure to carefully proofread your paper before submitting it!
