Directions
For this assignment, students will compose essays of no fewer than 750-1,250 words (about three-five full pages) that establish and explain relationships or connections between texts, using one of the topics listed below. All essays should meet the established objectives and guidelines and will be graded using the fiction rubric.
All essays should connect two stories in a meaningful way. Students should select at least two stories from those listed in the module.
No outside sources should be consulted. The work should be original. Failure to cite any sources used will result in failure for the essay and most likely the course, as well as additional sanctions from the student life office.
Possible Topics
A. Discuss the role of mothers in at least two texts. For example, how do mothers (or mother-figures) meet or challenge our cultural expectations in Kincaid’s “Girl” and Morrison’s “Recitatif”? Be specific and provide textual evidence to support your reading.
B. Discuss the expectations within relationships using two of the short fiction texts from the course reading list. What do the characters seem to expect from one another? How do they meet or fail to meet those expectations? What might this tell us about the cultures of the texts? Be specific and provide textual evidence to support your reading.
C. Discuss the impact of race, class, or gender on cultural roles for characters in the texts. Please do not write about generic cultural issues–focus on the texts! For example, do the men in two of the texts seem to perform stereotypically? Do the women in two of the stories face cultural expectations of them that are unrealistic? What are the consequences of these issues? Be specific and provide textual evidence to support your reading.
D. Come up with your topic that deals, in some fashion, with social roles, expectations, or relationships. If you do not have the NIL, you should be able to find these online–most of them, anyhow.
Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” in the NIL, pp. 652-654
Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” on pp. 171-172
Bobbie Ann Mason’s “Shiloh” on pp. 803-813
Toni Morrison’s “Recitatif” on pp. 201-215
