Winsome Manufacturing Company

Winsome Manufacturing Company produces plastic storage containers and sells them to the home consumer through home sales events. At the company’s

quarterly meeting, the head of marketing described a new product to be introduced in the first quarter of the next fiscal year, approximately 9

months from now. The product will be a room-sized plastic storage unit suitable to the outside of the home; it is similar to a competitor’s product

but will have significantly more features. This product will open new markets for the sales channel, lay the foundation for add-on products, and

generate new revenues. Management has only seen preliminary sketches of the potential product but are very excited by the new product.

The project will require participation from the design, production, purchasing, shipping, sales, and marketing departments. Winsome Manufacturing

owns a line of suitable injection molds, so all manufacturing will be done in-house. The project manager for this project has not yet been selected,

but that decision is expected to be made in the next week.

A preliminary project initiation meeting will result in the identification of the project sponsor, selection of a project manager, and creation of

the project charter. A manager in the production department who knows you are taking a college project management course asks you to prepare a brief

report to help him prepare for the meeting by answering the following questions:
•Who are the project stakeholders? How will they be involved in the project?
•Who should be the project sponsor? Why?
•From which department should the project manager come? Why?
•What skills and experience are likely needed by the project manager for each phase in the project life cycle, and how do they differ between the

various phases?
•What type of communication plan will likely be needed during the project? ◦What information should be shared with the project stakeholders?
◦What is the mechanism that could be used for each type of information?
◦What is the frequency with which information should be shared?
◦What should be done if project communications are not proving to be effective?
◦What technology could be used for project communications?
◦At what point could communication about the project become an ethical or legal issue?

•What information should be included in the following elements of the project charter: ◦What is the problem the project proposes to address?
◦What business opportunity might project completion create?
◦What is the business case for undertaking the project?
◦What is the financial impact of the project?
◦What are the expected results of the project?
◦What value will the project add?
◦What are risks that might be involved with undertaking the project?
◦What is the potential impact to the company if the project is not undertaken

Threat to global security

Question=11. Is the UN Security Council of any relevance whatsoever to the cause of reducing global insecurity? Illustrate your answer using

specific examples

Essay Assignment Guidelines ― March 2015

1. Ensure you conduct sufficient background research in the library and additional resource points: the list reflects your breadth and depth of

reading and research capability. Remember, this is also about developing ‘skills’ – and a major skill is the demonstrable ability to identity,

collect, evaluate information and then use it appropriately in your essays/studies/reports etc.
2. Obviously a paper with limited citations is not going to do well because there is not a great deal of information available to build your study.

Also, the frequent use of one or two cited works rather than the breadth of cited works suggest an over-reliance on these and need for wider

corroboration.
3. A grasp of the key debates and issues must be demonstrated.
4. The critical element is that of theory and methodology. This is absolutely central to the success of your paper. Identify an appropriate

conceptual approach and then apply it through a methodological framework for analysis. The two elements are linked insofar as your theoretical

approach provides the key concepts or ideas that can be taken to ‘frame’ your study i.e. to provide the categories to organise the material you

collect and also to provide the evaluative benchmarks to evaluate the information, to test it and to turn it into evidence (all information is not

evidence).
5. There must be a clear and coherent structure to the paper. It must hang together and your conceptual and analytical approaches will help to do

this. Try and avoid your paper being fragmented, rather aim for a flow through the paper from your initial questions through analysis to conclusion.
6. You must avoid simple historical narratives – often essays are chronological – ‘this happened then this was followed by …’ – this might be useful

for you as you get to grips with what happened but NOT in your essay. This is because strong academic scholarship moves us away from description and

opinion to critical analysis and argument (i.e. points of explanation for a problem (the set question) supported by evidence (information assessed

and critically evaluated for capacity to support or refute a point of explanation).
7. A central line of argument is also a key element. You are putting forward a preliminary hypothesis, you can test this against the available

evidence and either disprove or prove all or part of the initial argument. From this it should be clear that I want you to try and argue a case and

try and persuade me of its validity; imagine yourself in a court of law advocating a case before a jury to be convinced of your argument; you need

to pick out the key points you think will convince them and show them the evidence to support each of the points you make. Cumulatively these then

build up to a conclusion that makes your argument irrefutable.
8. Referencing: make sure that where you refer to information; authors, statistics, reports, etc. that you make sure these are referenced with

either a footnote or and endnote – if not then they stand merely as assertions/opinions rather than substantiated points of argument.
9. Presentation and style – essays must be typewritten; double-spaced; have margins running down both sides of text; the bibliography can begin on a

separate page following the end of the essay and endnotes. Obviously, the Use of English must be to the requisite high standard expected at MA level

in order to avoid the loss of presentational marks.

Strategic Analysis/Management of Amazon.com

The topic should be on a Strategic Analysis/Management of Amazon.com: The following is a summary of the topical areas of interest as a basis for the

research paper:

Strategic Management – to include strategic leadership and planning, SWOT analysis, core capabilities assessment, building or enhancing competitive

advantages, functional-level strategy, business-level strategy, global environment, corporate-level strategy to include horizontal and vertical

integration, strategic outsourcing, diversification, business ethics and corporate governance.
__________________________________________________________
Your MS Word document will be a minimum of 20 pages of actual content in APA format (i.e., double-spaced with one-inch margins all around) and not

to exceed 35 pages maximum.

You will provide the following:
Title page,
Abstract with Key Words,
Table of Contents,
your actual research content – divided into major headings and subheadings, as appropriate;
References, which appears on a separate page at the end of your document, but prior to any Appendices.
 You may provide artwork/graphics, exhibits, figures, graphs, and tables; but I would prefer that you insert these at the end of your document as

an Appendix or Appendices.
You must perform scholarly research to complete this assignment. You MUST have evidentiary support from the extant literature to develop your formal

topical paper. I strongly recommend at least three (03) parenthetical citations per page and at least 15 or more authoritative resources (including

your textbook) as the minimum expectations for this paper.
Utilize the identified resources from your annotated bibliography as a basis for your research paper. If you completed the annotated bibliography

process correctly, it will make the research paper much easier to design and develop. Note that it is not necessary to use all of the listed sources

from the annotated bibliography. Conversely, you may want to supplement that original list with other new and interesting sources, which you have

discovered subsequent to the annotated bibliography process.

Discussion Questions: If we take the time to look and think, we can find statistics all around us. How does statistics affect your work or everyday life?

Question #1: For this weeks forum, find a news article that includes statistics. An example would be a sports story, political poll, etc. Present

the article and details of the statistics. Think about how these statistics can be altered to fit the news story. Compare and contrast descriptive

and inferential statistics as they apply to your news article. An example would be a political poll by CNN would have different findings than Fox

News. Also discuss which type of table or graph would best explain this information and why.

Question #2: If we take the time to look and think, we can find statistics all around us. How does statistics affect your work or everyday life? For

example, if you coach or train athletes, the tests you use to predict performance or determine training methods use statistics. How do these tests

use statistics? Please provide details and your opinion about these items and they affect your life in regards to this weeks readings.

Question #3:
Go to the following website: https://php.delawareonline.com/news/2013/school-test-scores/

This is the site for school tests scores for the state of Delaware. You can select a district and you need to examine the test scores presented. You

do not need to go into detail on each grade, but select one grade and discuss how the scores are presented. Then look at the other data available

that shows test scores by race. While the overall grade is scoring say an 85% on the test, is that a true picture of the class? Why or why not?

There are enough schools/districts that you cannot repeat the information provided by another student

Question #4
Read the attached article by Cohen. This is a short article on statistics. What are your views after reading the article? Was there any part of the

article that helped you understand a concept better? I do not want a review of the article as everyone is reading the same article. I am looking for

your thoughts and feelings on the content of the article. ( see attached docuemtn for the article listed as Cohen)

Question # 5
This week we focused on correlation.

Here are some examples of positive correlations:

1. SAT scores and college achievement—among college students, those with higher SAT scores also have higher grades

2. Happiness and helpfulness—as people’s happiness level increases, so does their helpfulness (conversely, as people’s happiness level decreases, so

does their helpfulness)

Here are some examples of positive correlations:

1. Education and years in jail—people who have more years of education tend to have fewer years in jail (or phrased as people with more years in

jail tend to have fewer years of education)

2. Crying and being held—among babies, those who are held more tend to cry less (or phrased as babies who are held less tend to cry more)

Think of an example of a positive and negative correlation and present each to the class. Is there any research to back up your correlation? If so,

please reference the information. If you have not found anything to support your correlation, why do you feel it is accurate?
