As we are learning this week, eligibility for Section 8 housing vouchers is determined by local housing authorities based on the total annual gross income and family size and is limited to US citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status.

In general, the family’s income may not exceed 50% of the median income for the county or metropolitan area in which the family chooses to live.

By law, a local housing authority must provide 75 percent of its voucher to applicants whose incomes do not exceed 30 percent of the area median income. Median income levels are published by HUD and vary by location.
For this assignment, contact two local housing authorities in Connecticut (please choose the two that are closest to your last name alphabetically so that everyone is not contacting the same place), as well as one in a neighboring state such as New York, Rhode Island, or Massachusetts (you can find a listing of local housing authorities by state at http://portal.hud.gov/hudportal/HUD?

src=/program_offices/public_indian_housing/pha/contacts.) Do not tell anyone you talk to that you are contacting them as part of a class assignment; simply act like you are a person interested in finding out information. Find out:
What the eligible income level is for a family of four (two adults and two children) or a family of three (one adult and two children) in order for that family to qualify for public housing or rental vouchers

For your write-up, write a summary of your experiences in which you identify the housing authorities you contacted, the dates and times you spoke with them, and the information you obtained. If you are unable to obtain the information above, your paper should describe your efforts to acquire the information and the reasons why you were unable to do so. If you are unable to acquire the information, you will be judged based on the effort you put forth. You should conclude by discussing what you learned from your experience about the availability of housing assistance and the process of trying to get assistance. Your write-up should be approximately 2 pages, double-spaced.
