Description
Your task is to use elements of fiction�plot, story, character, setting, narrator, language/style, metaphor, imagery�to assert an interpretation. Don�t think in terms of explaining the entire novel. Instead, pick some aspect of it (suggestions made in prompts) that you can develop in detail. I recommend responding to the following prompts, but if you care to take a different slant on the novel, I urge you to run it past me. I do encourage originality. Take care to defend your thesis thoroughly; don�t ignore important aspects of the novel if they don�t fit with what you are trying to say.
Prompt A: Jeffrey Lilburn points out the gerontophobia that the novel exposes. Discuss the ways that fear of aging are evident (you may make several claims about the categories or types of fear of aging). What do you think Garcia Marquez wants us to understand or see anew about aging, our attitudes about aging.
Prompt B: Discuss what the author is stating about love. Different types of love are represented in the relationship between Fermina Daza and Dr. Juvenal Urbino, between Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza, and between Jeremiah de Saint-Amour and his unnamed mistress. Discuss the complexities of these loves. You might also, or alternatively, consider Lilburn�s suggestion that Garcia Marquez is questioning the existence of any love. His exploration is complex, so there is no need to reduce what he is saying to simplistic ideas or clich�s. Your claims and support will therefore focus on different aspects of love.
Prompt C: Does Florentino Ariza really represent romantic love? How does all of his reckless and even criminal behavior come together with his eternal devotion to Fermina?
Prompt D: Discuss this novel in terms of the historical and social context Garcia Marquez describes. This mythic place, which resembles Columbia, moves from a colonial to a modern era. How are these characters, and the concept of love, effected by the technological changes, civil wars, the European influence in art and learning, and social changes?
Special considerations for this essay form
1. I expect you to use examples from throughout the novel to support your analysis. This will include quotes, paraphrases, and summaries of plot or character or scene.
2. Do be careful not to use extensive block quotes to achieve the page length requirement.
3. I ask that you use quotes or paraphrases from one critical study; most likely this will be the Lilburn essay in your Reader. However, you may find and use material from other critical studies. For a four page essay, I expect to see 1-2 references to a critical study.
4. If you refer to the use of Magical Realism, please clarify your terminology using definitions either from the class presentation or from the Reader. The literary element relevant is style, that is he uses magical realism as a style.
5. Be sure your essay is well organized around a thesis, made explicit in the introductory paragraph.
6. Write a compelling introduction. I generally recommend writing the introduction AFTER you�ve written the paper. The introductory paragraph must include the title of the book, underlined (all book titles are underlined) and the author�s full name. (Once you�ve given the author�s name in the introduction, you can thereafter refer to him as Garcia Marquez; don�t refer to him as Gabriel unless he is a close personal friend of yours.)
7. Author an imaginative title.
8. Use correct MLA format, including a Works Cited that shows the text used Use in-text citations.
9. As you read the novel, try to get a direction in mind so that you can mark passages that seem to relate. Follow instincts in this respect; you will assemble the evidence as you perform your analysis (inductive reasoning); therefore, don�t try to analyze as you do your first reading.
10. Do not use �I�, as in �I believe,� �I think,� �I feel.� You are the author, so we already know these are your thoughts.
Specifications
Paper length is a full 4 pages, typed, double-spaced, using MLA style format. Include a works cited, the edition of the novel you are using as well as any supporting materials.

B paper:
-Provides a thesis but some elements of the paper are not reflected in it
-Contains analysis although thinking may lack sophistication or originality
-Most of the source integration follows the guidelines but there are some long quotations that could be avoided and/or some inaccuracies in citations
-Maintains organization throughout most of the essay but some ideas are lacking enough context or transition to understand how they relate with one another to develop the thesis
-Mostly accurate grammar, readability, spelling and punctuation
C paper:
-Thesis is too vague and general but it attempts to make an overall claim about the work
-Insufficient analysis to support thesis
-Difficulty distinguishing student�s ideas from literary sources and/or inappropriate use of quotes; guidelines for effective source integration not followed sufficiently
-Shows potential for organization, but is lacking overall cohesiveness and transitions between ideas
-Demonstrates problems with mechanics that interfere with readability.
