Style:
Any generally recognized style is fine – APA, MLA, Turabian, etc. – or a variant, as long as endnotes or bibliography, as well as citations, are clearly indicated and sources can be retrieved from the information provided. For web sources, indicate the URL (web address), whatever appears to be the page title, name of the site (such as the ITU website), and date accessed. You MUST make it clear which items in your bibliography are books, which are refereed/academic journal articles, and which are non-academic articles from the web or print sources. See citation samples below.
Arrangement and length:
Title page (with your name as you are registered in the course, section number, and semester designation). Length should be: title page + 8 pages of body + bibliography. Any endnotes are additional.
Bibliography:
Include, as a minimum, 4 books and 10 academic/referred journal articles. You may substitute 3 non-academic articles from web-based or print sources for a single academic journal article in one instance only. Do not include the textbook or other assigned course materials in the bibliography or in the count of sources.
Plagiarism:
Do not plagiarize. This will result, in most cases, in an “F” for the assignment, at the least. Slightly modifying online text or combining text from multiple sources don’t make plagiarism harder to identify. Extensive thought-for-thought paraphrasing of other sources still constitutes plagiarism, even if the wording is changed. On a related note, avoid direct quotes except where actually needed (see below).
Writing mechanics:
Write in English and use a clearly readable, normal, everyday font such as Arial, Helvetica, Courier, or Times Roman (not a “novelty” or ornamental font), size 10-12 (11 or 12 recommended), double-spaced, 1-inch margins, numbered pages (do not number blank pages). Any unusual blank space will not be included in the page count. Illustrations and charts will not be counted in the page count. Do not use line spacing larger than double spacing, and do not use type larger than size 12.
Quotes and citations:
Do not cite Wikipedia or one of the various websites which copy from Wikipedia. Do not include Wikipedia or the course textbook or any of the assigned course materials in your bibliography. Avoid direct quotes wherever possible. If you use direct quotes, keep them very brief and only use them when it’s important for some reason to retain the writer’s exact wording. Direct quotes must be enclosed in beginning and ending double quotation marks (“). If you refer to a source or an author in the text, keep the reference as brief as possible; just use the author’s last name where possible.
In general, the following considerations are requirements:
The topic must be directly media-related.
The paper’s focus must NOT be primarily on the U.S.
The paper must include ample focus on principles and concepts, not just facts or details.
The following topics are NOT acceptable:
o Topics that are primarily American in focus.
o Topics that are not media related.
o The topic of the digital divide.
o Topics that are trivial or relatively insignificant in focus, such as the plot of a foreign film, or the career of a celebrity.
