For this assignment, you will write a creative extended definition of an abstract concept or controversial or unfamiliar term. A definition essay defines a word, term, or concept in depth by providing a personal commentary on what the specific subject means. Abstract and controversial words have different meanings for different individuals. Your goal is to further your audience’s understanding of a concept by relating your personal understanding of it. Please avoid dictionary definitions.
You may use one or some combination of other patterns to develop your definition: example, comparison/contrast, and/or classification. You may also use negation to develop your definition; negation is telling what something is not. Most all essays contain narrative and description, but this essay cannot be just those patterns. Do not write a narrative essay. Most importantly, your essay must make a point. Make sure that you have a clear and specific thesis that tells readers just how you will define the term. In this essay, you may use first person “I,” but avoid second person “you.”
This essay must be logically organized, grammatically correct, clearly and precisely worded, and sufficiently supported.
