Tech Writing-Instructional Guide – Outline and Sections of Instruction Guide

There are 2 parts to this assignment. One is to create an outline of the instructional guide that includes the following:

• Overview of relevant websites

• Guidelines for evaluating websites

• User security

The second part is to create sample sections of the instructional guide (suggested length of 5–7 pages).

Full assignment description below.

Scenario:

You are working with one of the organizations below to create an instructional guide. You will be conducting research and promoting the instructional guide to the organization’s board. Your instructional guide should explain the real-world use of an Internet product or products to your audience in a way that is sensitive to your audience’s needs, expectations, and level of expertise. The Internet sites you use for this task must be sites that are available to the general public (such as software support sites, social networking sites, search engines, video-sharing websites, etc.). Websites where users create accounts that are free of charge are preferred.

• Organization 1: A local parents group. Members of this group are evenly split in technological ability; half are very comfortable with technology, while the other half struggle with it. They need a guide that is geared to parents who want to learn about social networking sites that their children (of all ages) are using, as well as smaller, emerging sites. Parents are looking for explanations of how the sites work, accounts and account settings, “friending” and posting pictures and links, and hands-on instructions for monitoring their children’s accounts and postings.

• Organization 2: Librarians at a genealogical institute. These librarians use technology on a daily basis and are extremely comfortable with the technology they use. However, they need guidance for using online book sites to acquire new genealogy-related books and sell rare books they currently own. They want to use sites like BookFinder.com, eBay, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble, and any others that are available, and need guidance for account and credit card safety issues, searching, previewing, pricing, getting and leaving feedback, using the terminology for describing book quality, setting up agents, and other aspects of online book selling.

• Organization 3: A charity organization. This organization includes mostly older adult members. Although most members of the organization can perform simple computer tasks such as sending an e-mail, they are, overall, unfamiliar with most technology and it takes them a long time to learn new applications. Members want to be able to raise money by selling homemade crafts and other goods online to support local artisans while also raising money for charity. They want to use various selling sites such as eBay and Etsy, and need to know how to list items to sell and how to safeguard site accounts and PayPal accounts.

Your document should inform your audience about what they need and want to know, and provide instructions as well as advisory information and strategic direction. Your research should extend beyond your own personal user experiences to address your audience’s anticipated needs. The resources you will use for this task could potentially include online help and instructions available from the websites you are recommending, user boards, information you request via e-mail, YouTube instructional videos, or any other reliable source that provides information that helps you achieve your objective. You are to translate your research findings into one useful end product for your audience.

Task:

A. Develop an outline of the instructional guide that includes the following:

• Overview of relevant websites

• Guidelines for evaluating websites

• User security

Engaging the art work

Write a catalog entry for a single object of your choosing. The length of your text should be between 800-1000 words. In this entry, you should think about (and discuss) the formal qualities of the work–what choices did the artist make, and how do these choices influence the audience’s perceptions. In terms of formal analysis, you should think through the following categories:

Line
Shape
Color
Contrast
Rhythm / pattern
Texture (both physical and perceived)
Scale and size
In addition to the formal aspects of the work, you might think about how you would communicate the work’s salient features to someone interested in learning about the work. If the work you choose is a portrait, you might convey the relevant details about the sitter; alternatively, you might know who the sitter is and instead focus on how the object you are writing about is reflective of the artist’s body of work. If the object is a building, you might think about its purpose, its architect(s), or other features that strike you. In short, there is no wrong choice to make, provided that you are communicating with your reader. You should feel free to choose an object that interests you, from any period in time. I will be grading these and giving you feedback. Some other rules:

You must include the image in your document, and submit the assignment online by the specified date and time.
You may not plagiarize. You must make sure that the work you submit is your own, and not copied or paraphrased from someone else. You must list your sources at the end of the assignment.
You may not choose an object that are in any of the class videos. You should consult the later videos if you are choosing an object from those periods so that you do not inadvertently choose a work that we will cover.

Let’s suppose that you want to test the effects of three different amounts of a new energy drink called “Blast” on performance on a multiplication task

1) Let’s suppose that you want to test the effects of three different amounts of a new energy drink called “Blast” on performance on a multiplication task, using the experimental method of research.
1A) Identify the independent and dependent variables.
1B) Provide an operational definition for the dependent variable.
1C) What would the control and experimental groups be?
1D) What is a placebo effect? Is it a concern in this study? Briefly explain.
1E) Identify one control procedure that you might use. In other words, what is one thing that would be important to hold constant across all subjects?
1F) Do you need to use random assignment and random selection of subjects? Explain. 1G) Identify one thing that could theoretically end up acting as a confounding variable and explain why it would be a confounding variable.
1H) What is a double-blind procedure? Comment about whether it should be used in this study.
1I) What type of conclusion can you draw from this method of research? Why?
QUESTION 2 (worth 11 marks)
2A) If you wanted to determine whether there is a relationship between “Blast” and “intelligence” and decided to use the correlation method of research, what might you do? 2B) Suppose you find that these two variables are strongly correlated and that the more Blast a person drinks, the more intelligent they are. Are you able to conclude that Blast consumption is the cause for level of intelligence? Explain your answer.
2C) Give one variable that would likely be positively correlated with the consumption of Blast in university students.
2D) Give one variable that would likely be negatively correlated with the consumption of Blast in university students. (Don’t give the same answer as in 2C)
2E) If the correlation coefficient between Blast and intelligence is r = -.86, describe how these two variables are related.
2F) Draw a scatterplot that would approximately illustrate this correlation.
QUESTION 3 (worth 8 marks)
3) Using a “classical conditioning diagram” (like I used in lecture or as shown in Figure 20.4 on pg 281 of your text) show how a “fear of orange hats” might come about as a result of higher-order conditioning, with “orange hat” being the higher-order CS (sometimes called “second-order” CS). Be sure to show all of the steps involved and label all important components. If any information is missing, you should “make it up”.

QUESTION 4 (worth 15 marks)
Waldo graduated from high school with a 95% average. Harvey, a mutual friend says, “Wow, with grades like that he must be really smart! He can thank genetics for that because his parents are also smart! I want to construct my own IQ test and see how Waldo scores on it.”
4A) Do you agree with Harvey’s belief that Waldo must be smart because of his grades? Explain.
4B) Do you agree that genetics are responsible for Waldo’s intelligence? In your answer, briefly discuss the results of twin and adoptive studies and explain the idea behind reaction range.
4C) Harvey wants to construct his own intelligence test and wants to ensure that it’s a good one. What advice would you give him about test construction?

Current Business Article Analyses

Current Business Article Analyses
Each student is required to develop a sort of “case analysis” from a recently published business article (published January 2013 or after) from a business or current events publication. The article you select for this analysis should outline a current business dilemma or new development related to the week’s topics. The subject matter of the article/case analysis must have some relevancy to the section topics/chapters scheduled for lecture and discussion during the week you are assigned to have this prepared for class. Your analysis and questions should essentially describe the highlights of the article, why you think it is relevant to one of the topics, and your thoughts about the problem being faced or the new development within a particular business, corporation, organization, or brand. Good publication sources are: Business Week, The Economist, Fortune, Forbes, Brandweek, Ad Age, Wall St Journal, Newsweek, Time, U.S. News & World Report. PLEASE NOTE YOU MAY NOT USE AN ARTICLE DOWNLOADED FROM THE INTERNET unless the publication also has a hard copy version. By this I mean that an article from anyone’s private website or organization that does not have a publication is not considered a valid, credible source of information. However, most of the major business publications have a hard copy version, so the downloaded article would be fine.

Case Analysis written portion: You are required to develop a two-page case analysis from this article. Included in the 2 pages are: a one-page (double-spaced, font size 10-12) summary of the main points discussed in the article and why you believe it is an important case to look at for that particular section/topics/chapter, AND you must also prepare five (5) relevant questions for class analysis related to the article AS WELL AS your own answers and/or ideas related to these questions (minimum ONE FULL page to the question answers, doubled-spaced, font size 10-12). The actual article from the magazine, photocopy, or downloaded version of the article must be submitted to me as well on that day, stapled to the back of your written analysis.

Article should be related on these topics
• Improving decisions with marketing research information.
• Five-step approach to marketing research.
• Types of research in marketing field.

I prefer to use Bloomberg Businessweek. Also don’t forget to send me the copy of the article so that I can print it out.
