Quantitative analysis

1b. Quantitative analysis (1200 words)

You have been given a data set to analyse for this piece of work that you will download.
Data to be downloaded for assessment
Attached Files:
• SF12 assessment data11415.sav (9.449 KB)

You are required to write TWO sections. Failure to address the assignment in its entirety often leads to failure of the task.

Section A
? Write up the findings and present data that addresses the objectives of the research study.
? You should present data in the style of a results section in a journal article (500 words).
? Tables and Figures will not form part of the word count. You should NOT discuss the findings.
? You will be given an exemplar article that you should use as a guide for how to present results for an academic audience.

Section B
This should demonstrate your theoretical and practical understanding about the analytical processes and statistical techniques drawing on section 1 to illustrate your points. You should discuss including the following issues (700 words).

? Importance of levels of measurement in statistical theory
? Understanding of probability and statistical significance
? How to choose statistical tests and theory about the tests
? Understanding of the assumptions of parametric tests
? You will also produce a Harvard reference list to support this section

Criteria for marking the quantitative analysis:
• Demonstrate the ability to present, interpret, and summarise the results of the analysis in an appropriate form (50%).
• Demonstrate understanding and application of statistical principles (50%)
Expected
Systematic approach to analysis; demonstrates good understanding of use of statistical methods.
Clear and appropriate description of procedures and tests.
Work demonstrates good skills in analysis and interpretation of quantitative data; excellent concise academic presentation of results.
Thorough ability to discuss and apply statistical theory with reference to literature, illustrating points by reference to results.

Description of the Quantitative study:
A questionnaire) was given to all postgraduate students studying public health-related course within Faculty of the UK at Leeds Met. The self-reported data was entered into SPSS.

Objectives of the Study:
1. To describe the health status of the students studying public health at Leeds Met.
2. To examine the relationships and/or differences between health status and social determinants of health.
3. To investigate the relationships and/or differences in health status and health-related behaviour.

The data set has many variables which correspond largely to the questionnaire SF12 which examines different dimensions of health. Demographics and socio-economic status information were also collected. The variable score is an addition of the single items relating to health status to give an overall score of health status where 12 is the poorest level of health status and 56 is the maximum attainment of health status. I am not permitted to use the usual scoring system for the SF12 for this module under copyright so have used this method of calculating a health value. This is not the usual way to transform the SF-12 data but it will serve our purpose for the assessment!

The occupational variable has been classified into several categories with 1 being the highest status occupation. The full questionnaire is on MyBeckett should you need to look at it to help you with your assignment.

Tips for the quantitative assignment

1 In approaching the assignment you should examine the stated research objectives. As we have practiced in the teaching session/s, there are a huge range of questions that you could answer by performing both descriptive and inferential statistics, BUT try to consider in a logical way, which are the most important questions to answer. Don’t attempt every inferential test on every bit of data. Be discerning and thoughtful.
2 As a guide you should be considering using at least 3 different types of inferential statistical tests, together with appropriate descriptive statistics
3 You should always present descriptive information about the characteristics of the sample so that a reader can immediately understand
4 You should consider how best to present quantitative information. This can be achieved by examining similar data in journal articles and mirroring that style. Remember to use tables and graphs appropriately. Consider the titles and labels of tables and graphs carefully. Make it easy for the reader to understand what you are presenting. I have given you one as an exemplar
5 You should NOT cut and paste SPSS tables into the results. They are not user friendly. You should design you own word tables and enter data into these. However, graphs, if appropriately titled and labelled, can be cut and paste into the results.
6 After presenting tables and graphs you should describe the main features and points in words (without just repeating the information in the tables or graphs).
7 Demonstrate an understanding of key statistical issues ie statistical significance ad assumptions of the statistical tests.
8 You should ensure that the entire assignment brief is addressed to give yourself a chance of obtaining the best possible mark. If you don’t address one of the sections you are not likely to pass.
9 This is an individual assignment so while you are working on the same dataset you will be running different statistical tests and your individual assignments will be different. It is not permitted to copy each other’s assignments.

Research in security science

QUESTION (DRISS)
Designed for large commercial venues, CrimeFace is a new video analytic system that alerts security teams when someone believed to be a thief enters in their premises. The system is based on face recognition algorithms. It compares a set of features extracted from an image of the suspect’s face (e.g. someone entering the store), with the sets of features extracted from images of known offenders in the CrimeFace digital library.
The images of potential suspects are from live CCTV feeds, and can come from any of the cameras located in the store. The images of offenders are obtained from various sources who use CrimeFace. These include the store’s own CCTV images of individuals who have previously been caught stealing in their premises.
CrimeFace Ltd, the company manufacturing the system, would like a reputable academic (you) to answer the following research question: “Does the implementation of the CrimeFace system have a significant positive effect on the prevention and disruption of retail theft in the stores where it is installed?”
CrimeFace Ltd invited you to submit a document consisting of four parts:

1- Research Hypothesis
Formulation of a research hypothesis, along with some justification.
Several hypotheses would probably need be tested in order to fully answer the research question. For this assessment, you are being asked to specify just one of them, ideally the most important one. The hypothesis should be sufficiently broad to give CrimeFace a good idea of what you would do to answer the question, and sufficiently narrow to be tested. Briefly mention what else would need to be tested during the project to answer the above research question.
2- Evidence
Description of what would constitute evidence to test the hypothesis.
You should introduce your null and alternative statistical hypotheses here.
3- Research Design
Specification of the following elements: design components, data collection method(s), and data analysis method(s) that would be adopted to provide the sought evidence, along with a justification for your design choices.
You may want to use the APA framework to structure your answer. It should be possible for the reader to read the details of the design without having to read the justifications.
4- Limitations
Presentation, evaluation and discussion of the design’s limitations.
Use your hypothesis (not the research question) as a reference point to answer this part. In other words, you do not need to explain again what else would need to be tested that your hypothesis does not cover to answer the research question.
Marks will be deducted if you present a constraint as a limitation.
Project constraints:
• The study must not last longer than 6 months.
• The cost of implementing the system will be covered by CrimeFace. Reasonable travel cost will be covered too.
• A large UK supermarket group called Aldesco agreed to help you with the study. They are happy to give you access to their data and facility, providing the project does not disturb their activities.
• Aldesco does not wish you to make your relationship public; no one should know that they are interested in the CrimeFace system until the end of the study.
• You may be able to obtain some police data but this may take more than six months.
.
.
FORMAT
You must separate your answers and organise them in the same order as in the problem sheet. In this way it will be easier for the external examiner to review your answers, and easier for you to match them to the marking scheme. When reading a paragraph in your copy, it should be evident for the external examiner to know which question and subquestion it refers to.
.
MARKING CRITERIA
In addition to the criteria set out above, the following criteria will be taken into account
when grading your exam paper:
• Presentation, structure and quality of writing
• Relevance, accuracy and pertinence of the answers (including correct use of technical terms)
• Appropriate references to, and understanding of, the relevant literature, including appropriate referencing style
• Evidence of having gone beyond the course materials (required readings and lecture notes)

Wisdom Continuum

Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum
SINCE YOU HAVE DONE RESEARCH FOR ME ON A PREVIOUS ASSIGNMENT, I FIGURE WE COULD YOU THE SAME SUBJECT ABOUT TELEMETRY/PATIENT SAFETY/ALARM FATIGUE. SOMETHING LIKE THAT. THIS IS A DIFFERENT CLASS JUST A FYI. ANY QUESTIONS CALL OR EMAIL
To prepare:

•Review the information in Figure 6-2 in Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.(WILL UPLOAD)
•Develop a clinical question related to your area of practice that you would like to explore.
•Consider what you currently know about this topic. What additional information would you need to answer the question?
•Using the continuum of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, determine how you would go about researching your question.
?Explore the available databases. Identify which of these databases you would use to find the information or data you need.
?Once you have identified useful databases, how would you go about finding the most relevant articles and information?
?Consider how you would extract the relevant information from the articles.
?How would you take the information and organize it in a way that was useful? How could you take the step from simply having useful knowledge to gaining wisdom?

TO COMPLETE:

Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following:

•Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific.
?Identify the databases and search words you would use.
?Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge.
•Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search.

Trading currency

Assessment Brief/ Task
The detailed requirements for this task are as follows:
You will be given a notional US$250,000 which is to be used to trade on the FOREX futures market. The objective of the assignment is so that you gain an understanding of what factors make the currency markets move and also what is a significant movement in terms of profit and loss.

You are restricted to the following markets and you should select just ONE currency to trade:-

Futures traded on the IMM:
• Euro/US$
• British Pound/US$
• Japanese Yen/US$

You are also restricted to TEN trades in total (5 open and 5 closing). This is a maximum, not a minimum. When you change “direction” or increase the size of a position you must close the existing trades first. This is to enable it to be easier to verify the accuracy of your trades.
You should only trade the March 2015 contracts. You may begin trading at any time. All trading must finish on or before Friday 20th December 2014 and you must trade for a minimum period of 10 working days (defined as “marking to market” on 10 occasions, i.e. having 10 settlement prices). Your written work must then be submitted (to the school office in MX Building) by Friday 17th January 2015. Please refer to ‘What should be included in the report?’ for more information on how to structure your work.
You are advised to spend some time researching the assignment and perhaps “paper trade” for a short time before embarking on your actual trades. If you haven’t begun trading by Monday 8th of December 2014 then you will be deemed to have failed the assignment as you will then have insufficient time to undertake 10 days of trading.
You can however begin trading at any time as long as you complete trading by Friday 20th December 2014 and trade for a period of ten working days. Note that the last day of trading for the March 2015 contracts is Monday 16th March. After this date there is no trading and therefore no prices available. Hence it is vitally important that you commence trading as soon as possible.
The details of each trade must be entered on-line at:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1CN_NDyG0wZDPYJtmeNJ_GmWTWW8agEwOg_Q01Y0wmOY/viewform

Note: This link will also be available on your WOLF topic for 7FC002 International Finance

You will be required to provide the following information when completing the trade form:

1) Student Number
2) Type of Trade (Opening or Closing)
3) Direction of Trade (Long or Short)
4) Currency Pairing
5) Number of Contracts
6) Current Price

Live futures prices are also available on-line at the CME (www.cmegroup.com).

You should trade on the GLOBEX prices. GLOBEX is an electronic platform and so the price is constantly changing although the most active trading period is during office hours Chicago time (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=64) which is 6 hours behind GMT. At around about 11pm (GMT) the prices will disappear for around 15 minutes whilst a settlement (Sett) price is recorded. This is the price used to undertake the “marking to market” each day.
The table below shows how the prices are quoted on the CME website. You trade at the last but your marking to market takes place at the Sett.

The Sett. here refers to the Settlement Price recorded on the last trading day (here that was 4th January 2011).
You should also construct a spreadsheet to keep track of the dollar value of your portfolio daily throughout the trading period. A printed copy of this spreadsheet should be incorporated with your written work. You should end up with a time series of dollar values of the portfolio over the trading period. You must also show the following:-
• The percentage rate of return over the trading period.
• The average daily percentage change in the value of your portfolio
• The standard deviation of the daily percentage changes.
• Information (Sharpe) ratio

Other rules include:-
• Round turn commission on futures is $25 per contract.
• Margin requirements on futures contracts are as follows (initial/maintenance):-

Yen ($3,300/$3,000)
Pound ($1,375/$1,250)
Euro ($2,200/$2,000)
source: cmegroup.com, 30/05/2014
• If you find that you have insufficient dollars to meet margin payments then you must close a futures position.
• No borrowing is allowed.
• To minimise computation cash may not be invested overnight in the money markets or invested in any other securities that earn a rate of return.
• Before you submit your work you MUST close out all of your futures positions. You will be penalised for fabricating trades to minimise losses and/or amplify profits.
• The face value of the US$/Yen future is Yen 12,500,000.
• The face value of the US$/£ future is £62,500.
• The face value of the US$/EURO future is EURO 125,000

What should be included in the report?
You should essentially include the reasoning behind each of the trades and as this coursework is a little different from others you may be confused as to how to structure it. The advice is to structure it like an events study, linking trade reasoning and evaluation to the information that was considered prior to trading. These strategies could take the form of new reports or fundamental and technical analysis of the respective currency parings.
You will also be required to benchmark and critically evaluate the performance of their portfolio. This should appear in the report under the heading of ‘Evaluation of Portfolio Performance’.
Enter into the spirit of the coursework. The list of trades that your calculations are based on should tally with the trades you entered. If you realised after the event that you made a mistake then own up to it, accept a mark deduction and list it as an error. Note that all your trades will be recorded online so please refrain from fabricating/changing trades. These trades will be monitored and if it is found that such events are taking place, penalties of up to a 100% mark deduction will be imposed.

You will have to include the following tables:

Record of Trades
Date & Time Trade Currency Contracts Maturity Price

Errors:
1.
2.
3.

At some point in the work you are going to have to reveal your overall result which I would like presented as follows:

Date Total % return

Total Gross Profit in dollars after trading:
Total Net Profit in dollars after trading:
Percentage return (2 decimal places):
Standard deviation of returns (2 decimal places):
Information Ratio (2 decimal places):

The “Total” figure here refers to the total value of your portfolio when the positions are valued at the end of each day in the marking to market process plus any cash that you have. You only have one “Total” figure for each day.
Everything should tally. The “Profit/Loss” referred to above should be verifiable by me from the list of trades you entered. The “Total Gross Profit” figure that you quote should then be the sum of all the individual profits for each trade. The “Total Net Profit” should be the “Total Gross Profit” minus total commission paid.

Embed all tables into the text even if this means using scissors and glue! For the more technically adept use copy and paste or for charts/images from webpages you can use the screen capture function.

The following information is important when:
• Preparing for your assessment
• Checking your work before you submit it
• Interpreting feedback on your work after marking.

Assessment Criteria
The module learning outcomes tested by this assessment task are indicated on page 1. The precise criteria against which your work will be marked is as follows:
• Content and theory
• Secondary research
• Critical analysis
• Academic writing
• Presentation and referencing

Principles

Assignment 4 – Small Group Teaching

Small group teaching: Referring to your learning activity matrix (task 5, learning styles workbook, also added as appendix in the cover sheet), develop a tutor guide for a new teacher who will be involved in teaching using small group methods. The guide should include two small group sessions and use two different small group teaching styles e.g. buzz groups, role play and should reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of each method and advice to your new tutor on minimising potential problems. This assignment should be written in a friendly style with thought given to layout, use of tables, figures and appendices.

Assignment 5 – Large Group Teaching

Large group teaching: Develop a one-sheet peer evaluation sheet. Use this to evaluate a lecture (this may be public or private, face to face or online). Reflect on what you liked about the lecture, what you might change, and how you could include what you have learnt in your own teaching (600 words not including peer evaluation sheet).
