The Dignity of the Human Person

Purpose:
“class dialogue” is a vehicle for thinking critically about issues relating to one’s faith tradition, personal vocation, social justice awareness and service experiences.

Format:
Class Dialogue assignment should consist of three parts and should be approximately two, double-spaced pages in length (not much more or less). Label each part of your Class Dialogue: “Part 1: Annotated Reading List,” “Part 2: Selected Quote,” and “Part 3: Reflection/Media Search.” And Part 4: Discussion question.

Part 1: Annotated Reading List:
There are 3 reading assignments. They are listed below.
Number each of the assigned readings/film clips. For each of the assigned readings or viewings, name the article (or document or film clip) and give a three sentence annotation stating what is contained in the reading or film clip. This format is similar to what you would find in an annotated bibliography. Here is an example:

Davidson, Hilda Ellis. Roles of the Northern Goddess. London: Routledge, 1998.
Davidson’s book provides a thorough examination of the major roles filled by the numerous pagan goddesses of Northern Europe in everyday life, including their roles in hunting, agriculture, domestic arts like weaving, the household, and death. The author discusses relevant archaeological evidence, patterns of symbol and ritual, and previous research. The book includes a number of black and white photographs of relevant artifacts.
(This annotation includes only one paragraph, a summary of the book. It provides a concise description of the project and the book’s project and its major features.) https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/03/

Part 2: Selected Quote:
Choose one quote from any one of the reading assignments that struck you for whatever reason. (Cite the title of the document and the page number.) Then in three sentences, explain why this quote held personal meaning for you.

Part 3: Reflection/Media Search:
The aim of this course is to relate readings in Catholic Social Justice to your own life. In this section, write about any personal experience you (or someone close to you) have had that is relevant to the topic for the week. Reflect honestly on the experience in light of the week’s reading. You must give one practical example of a connection between the reading and this life experience. This should be the longest section of your class dialogue.
If there is no pertinent experience you can draw upon, you may conduct a media search (this can include newspaper articles, YouTube videos, music videos, reputable news blogs, radio/podcasts, etc.) for a current, relevant media story/video that addresses the same issues found in the readings. Discuss the ways in which the media story relates to the readings, correctly citing the media source.

Part 4: Discussion question:
From this assignment (give the source) blah blah. For me, tha brought a disturbing question to mind: How can United States blah blah. Part of the world’s population blah blah. Come up with a well phrase question for possible class discussion.

The three reading assignments are:

1. USCCB Racism and the Catholic Church: https://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/cultural-diversity/african-american/brothers-and-sisters-to-us.cfm

2. (don’t have the book let me know if you need it) St. Francis and the Foolishness of God Dennis et al., pp. 28-44

3. Pope Francis’ Evangelii Gaudium https://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/apost_exhortations/documents/papa-francesco_esortazione-ap_20131124_evangelii-gaudium.html Introduction The Joy of the Gospel especially #6-10 and Part IV Ecumenical Dialogue #244

memes in digital age

Write a complete essay on the prompt. Remember, your essay should show your breadth of knowledge of the course materials. Use specific examples whenever possible, and cite (author, page number) whenever applicable. Use only course materials I provided.

PROMPT: We might argue that memes are becoming a new form of discourse in the digital age. In this hypermemetic world, memetic photos and memetic video are not only viewed, but they are also imitated and remixed. Successful memes become memeplexes and may even develop into shared social phenomena. If memes are a form of discourse, then successful memes produce a dialogue debating important concerns in our society. In this essay, 1) examine why some memes become successful. 2) Then, analyze what ONE of the following memeplexes is communicating: (a) We are the 99 percent; (b) the Tourist Guy; OR (c) Chris Crocker’s “Leave Britney Alone”

Current Event Analysis Requirements – to be taken from an online news article (not more than one-year old from the date it is submitted) dealing with “American government” appearing in a newswebsite (i.e. New York Times, MSNBC, Fox-news.com, News.yahoo.com, CNN.com, etc.,) posted (submitted)
(Citation, Summary, Discussion, and References) followed by an attached Word doc copy of the article all in the following format:

1.Summary – should be a summary of the article in the student’s own words normally in fewer words than the article itself and the student’s discussion.

2.Discussion (evidence of critical thinking) – narrative discussion including: (1) the student’s analysis as to the article’s significance, relevance and relationship to the course, (2) supported by at least four (4) in-text reference citations to pages in the course text, etc. and (3) in no less than 200 words. The in-text reference citation required is a modified version of the APA author-date citation system modified by including the relevant page number. For example, in the case where you are referencing let’s say page 400 in the course text then your citation would typically come at the end of the sentence (or phrase being referenced) but before the period (or comma, semicolon, etc.) and begin with a parenthesis followed by the author’s surname, date of publication, and the page number(s) and then the closing parenthesis, and then the period like so = (Losco & Baker, 2013, p. 400).

3.References

4.Attached copy of the article

The text I am using is AM GOV
Author is Losco Baker.2013-2014
This is just a suggestion but for the support of the course text as it relate to the article. I think you could relate this to the Amendments especially the Eight Amendment on page 85 of the course text. It talks about Cruel and unusual punishment.
